Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is a true African wildlife sanctuary located in Kenya’s Kajiado district with a border touching that of Tanzania to the south. This park, which covers an area of approximately 392 square kilometers (151 square miles), has been under protection since 1948. In 1974, it was gazetted as a national park, and in 1991, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This park contains two of the major swamps, an ancient lake dried up in the Pleistocene epoch, and semi-arid grasslands.

More so the park is home to 400 species of birds (including water birds such as pelicans, kingfishers, crakes and hamerkop) and 47 species of raptors . CLIMATE

Amboseli has a hot, dry climate for the most part. Showers of rain tend to be short and heavy. ”And while the daytime temperature is often about 28°C (82°F), at night it drops to around 15°C (59°F). Game drives in the early morning may be cold, so bring warm clothing. The two main rainy seasons are from mid-March to mid-May (long rains) and from late October or November to mid-December (short rains).

Lakes

The park is dotted with water bodies and has seasonal lakes, mostly in the western part of the park. These are basins of an ancient lake from the Pleistocene period and are filled during the rains. A few of these lakes are Kioko Lake, Conch Lake, Amboseli Lake, and Simel Lake. Along the shores of these lakes, swamps with thick papyrus provide habitat for diverse aquatic bird species in Amboseli National Park. These lakes are also very good places for watching water birds and large herds of animals coming to drink. They are one of the top sights for tourists to Amboseli National Park.

Marshes

Amboseli National Park also has a number of marshes and swamps that sustain the resident wildlife. These marshes are located mainly in the center of the park and are plainly seen due to their bright green color that contrasts with the arid, dusty plains surrounding them. The best time to visit Amboseli National Park for sightseeing is in the dry season (June to October and December to February). The park is open year-round, but this is the best time to visit when the weather is most suitable, with minimal rain, making it easy to view wildlife and take safaris.

The dry season makes for good game-viewing safaris because animals congregate around water, making sightings more predictable. Conversely, the wet season (March to May and November) is the best time for birding, as a plethora of migratory and local bird species can be observed during this time. How to Get to Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is a drive from Nairobi, where it takes about 4 hours. The park is situated to the southeast of the Nairobi city with an area of around 249 sq km. The park can be reached more easily by four-wheel drive vehicle, more so when taking the tarmac road that goes right into the park.
