Detailed itinerary
Day 1, Arrival in Entebbe and Overnight in Kampala
On arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be welcomed by your driver guide and transferred to Kampala. The drive from Entebbe to Kampala usually takes about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic and arrival time. After check-in, rest after your flight and prepare for the safari route starting the next morning. Dinner and overnight stay at Forest Cottages or a similar budget hotel. Meal plan: dinner only.
Day 2, Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Crater Lakes
After breakfast, meet your driver guide and begin the journey to Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda. The drive takes about 6 to 7 hours, depending on traffic and stops. You will stop at the Uganda Equator for photographs and the water experiment, then continue to Mbarara for lunch. Arrive in the Queen Elizabeth region in the late afternoon. If time allows, visit the crater lake viewpoints before continuing to your lodge. Dinner and overnight stay at Pumba Safari Cottages or a similar budget lodge. Meal plan: full board.
Day 3, Queen Elizabeth Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise
After an early breakfast, enter Queen Elizabeth National Park for a game drive in the Kasenyi area. If lion tracking is included in the final quote, it can improve the chances of learning about predator movement and conservation research, although wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. During the game drive, you may see elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks, warthogs, Uganda kob and other savannah wildlife. After lunch, transfer to the Kazinga Channel for a boat cruise. The channel connects Lake George and Lake Edward and is one of the best wildlife viewing areas in the park. During the cruise, you may see hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes and many water birds along the shores. The boat trip usually takes about 2 hours before you return to your lodge. Day 4, Transfer to Bwindi Through the Ishasha Sector
After breakfast, check out and begin the transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The route passes through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Ishasha is known for tree-climbing lions, although sightings are not guaranteed. Your guide will drive slowly through the sector and check known areas where lions may rest in fig trees during the heat of the day. The road can be rough in some sections, but it offers a scenic link between Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi. Continue to the Buhoma sector of Bwindi, arriving in the evening. Dinner and overnight stay at Buhoma Community Rest Camp or a similar budget lodge. Meal plan: full board.
Day 5, Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Bwindi park headquarters for gorilla trekking briefing. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers will explain the trekking rules, group allocation and how to behave around the gorillas. You will then enter the forest with rangers and trackers to search for your assigned gorilla family. The trek can take about 2 to 8 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas, terrain and forest conditions. Once the gorillas are found, you spend one hour observing them as they feed, rest, groom and move through the forest. After the trek, return to the lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6, Transfer from Bwindi to Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, check out and begin the transfer from Bwindi to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The drive takes about 5 to 6 hours, depending on border procedures and road conditions. You travel through Kisoro and cross into Rwanda through the Cyanika border before continuing to Musanze. If time allows, visit the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. You may take a nature walk, enjoy the viewpoints or choose a canoe ride on one of the lakes. After the visit, continue to your lodge in Musanze for dinner and overnight stay. Accommodation: Hotel Muhabura or similar budget lodge.
Day 7, Golden Monkey Tracking and Iby’Iwacu Cultural Visit
After breakfast, drive to Kinigi park headquarters for a briefing before golden monkey tracking in Volcanoes National Park. You will then continue to the trailhead with ranger guides. Golden monkeys live in the bamboo zones of Volcanoes National Park, and the activity gives travellers a lighter primate experience compared with gorilla trekking. Once the golden monkeys are found, you spend about one hour observing them as they feed, jump through the bamboo and move in groups. After the activity, return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for a cultural experience focused on Rwandan traditions, music, dance and community storytelling. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 8, Lake Kivu Boat Trip and Overnight in Kibuye
After breakfast, check out and drive to Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu. Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes and is shared by Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. On arrival, take a boat trip to explore nearby islands and enjoy views of the lake. After lunch in Gisenyi, continue along the Lake Kivu route towards Kibuye. This drive gives scenic views of hills, lakeside settlements and, in clear weather, distant mountain landscapes. Check in at Moriah Hill Resort or a similar budget-friendly lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 9, Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
After breakfast, check out and begin the journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park. The drive takes about 5 to 6 hours, passing through Rwanda’s hills, local communities and winding roads. Arrival is usually around lunchtime, depending on stops and road conditions. After lunch, check in at Gisakura Visitors Centre or a similar budget lodge and spend the afternoon at leisure. Dinner and overnight stay near Nyungwe Forest.
Day 10, Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk
After breakfast, transfer to the chimpanzee trekking briefing point in Nyungwe Forest. Nyungwe is one of East Africa’s important montane forests and is home to chimpanzees, monkeys, forest birds and rich vegetation. Chimpanzees here can be harder to locate than in some other forests, so the trek requires patience and flexibility. The trek can take about 2 to 5 hours depending on chimpanzee movement and forest conditions. Once the chimpanzees are found, you spend one hour observing them. After lunch, continue for the Nyungwe canopy walk. The canopy walkway is suspended high above the forest and gives aerial views of the rainforest, birds, trees and surrounding ridges. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 11, Transfer to Kigali and Rwanda Cultural Sites
After breakfast, check out and begin the journey to Kigali. The drive from Nyungwe to Kigali can take about 7 to 8 hours, depending on stops and road conditions. Along the way, you may visit the King’s Palace Museum and the Ethnographic Museum to learn about Rwanda’s history and cultural heritage. Arrive in Kigali in the late afternoon. Depending on timing, you may visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial or Kimironko Market before checking in at your hotel. Dinner and overnight stay at Step Town Motel or a similar budget hotel.
Day 12, Kigali City Tour and Departure
After breakfast, use the morning for a short Kigali city visit, depending on your flight time and what was covered the previous day. You may visit local markets, craft centres or other city sites before your transfer to Kigali International Airport.
