Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp, Laikipia

Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp sits high on the edge of an escarpment in Kenya’s private Loisaba Conservancy, with wide views stretching across the plains of northern Laikipia. From camp, you can look down towards a waterhole where animals come to drink throughout the day, while the elevated setting gives you an impressive view across the surrounding conservancy. Loisaba covers about 57,000 to 60,000 acres of open wilderness, with the Ewaso Nyiro, also known as the Ng’iro, and Narok Rivers running through the wider landscape. It feels a long way from the busy atmosphere you get around some national-park lodges. There is plenty of space, very few properties around you, and a real sense of being out in the Laikipia wilderness. The camp has just 12 tented rooms, along with a striking infinity pool overlooking the landscape. Your days can be as active as you want, with game drives, bush walks, horseback riding, cycling and visits to the conservancy’s anti-poaching dogs all available. It gives you a chance to see Loisaba from different angles rather than spending the entire safari inside a vehicle.

Where Is Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp Located?

Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp is set within the private Loisaba Conservancy in northern Laikipia, Kenya. The camp is built along an escarpment, with wide views across the surrounding plains and a waterhole below where animals come to drink throughout the day. Loisaba covers roughly 57,000 to 60,000 acres, with the Ewaso Nyiro and Narok Rivers providing water across the conservancy. Staying here means you are right in the middle of a large private wilderness area, rather than in a busy cluster of lodges. Wildlife protection and support for the neighbouring communities are both central to how the conservancy operates. The conservancy is owned by the Loisaba Community Trust, which supports wildlife conservation while also working with surrounding communities. This gives a stay at Loisaba a strong connection to both the landscape and the people living around it.

Tented Rooms and Family Suites at Loisaba Tented Camp

Loisaba Tented Camp has 12 tented rooms, including three Family Tents, all set up to make the most of the wide Laikipia landscape. Rather than feeling like rooms inside a conventional hotel, the tents open towards the conservancy, with plenty of space, fresh air and uninterrupted views around you.

Tented Rooms

Large floor-to-ceiling doors and windows bring the landscape right into the room, while the tents can be opened on several sides for wide views across the plains. High ceilings and polished wooden floors give the interiors a spacious, airy feel, with African-inspired furnishings balanced by contemporary European touches. Inside, there is a comfortable lounge area, while outside you have veranda seating and a broad private veranda overlooking the conservancy. A private grassed area beyond each tent gives you even more space around your accommodation and keeps you closely connected to the surrounding landscape.

Tented Rooms

Family Tents

Families have three dedicated tents to choose from. Each Family Tent has two bedrooms connected by a walkway, with a combination of double and twin sleeping arrangements. One of the three family units also has its own private plunge pool. If this is the unit you want, it is worth requesting it well ahead of your stay, particularly during busy safari periods.

Room Amenities

Every tent comes with the facilities you need for a comfortable stay, including:

  • Flush toilet
  • Double-basin vanity
  • Rainfall shower
  • Solar-heated hot water
  • Private veranda
  • Indoor lounge
  • Outdoor sitting area
  • In-room safe
  • Daily housekeeping
  • Free infant cribs
  • Rollaway or extra beds at an additional charge

The wide openings, elevated setting and outdoor seating make it easy to enjoy the surroundings even when you are relaxing in your tent between safari activities.

Restaurants and Dining at Loisaba Tented Camp

Dining at Loisaba is closely tied to the setting. The main camp tent houses an open dining area where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served, while the outdoor spaces give you plenty of opportunities to eat and enjoy a drink without losing sight of the Laikipia landscape.

Main Camp Dining

The dining area follows the same open design found throughout the camp, with a rustic wooden deck extending the space outdoors. From here, you can sit down for a meal while taking in views towards Mount Kenya and the surrounding plains. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at the camp, and special dietary requirements can be catered for with advance notice.

Bush Breakfasts and Outdoor Dining

A bush breakfast takes the morning meal out into the conservancy. After an early safari activity, you can stop in the bush for breakfast instead of heading straight back to camp, making the meal part of the morning itself. If you prefer to stay at camp, the main dining deck gives you another opportunity to enjoy your meal outside while taking in the surrounding views.

Bar, Lounge and Sundowners

The bar and open lounge sit alongside the main dining area, with additional seating on the deck for relaxing between activities. As evening approaches, sundowners can be taken out onto the plains. Sitting with a drink as the sun goes down across Laikipia gives you a relaxed way to finish the day’s safari before returning to camp for dinner.

Infinity Pool and Other Camp Facilities

Infinity Pool Overlooking Laikipia

The infinity pool is one of the standout spaces at Elewana Loisaba Tented Camp. Set along the escarpment, it looks out across the Laikipia Plains, so you can enjoy the wide views while taking a swim or relaxing beside the water. Comfortable loungers and umbrellas surround the pool, giving guests a cool place to unwind during the warmer hours between morning and afternoon safari activities.

Family and Guest Facilities

The camp also has a good range of facilities for a comfortable stay, including:

  • Free Wi-Fi in public areas
  • 24-hour front desk
  • Luggage storage
  • Free self-parking
  • Dry cleaning
  • Laundry service
  • Sun terrace
  • Children’s activities
  • Butler service
  • Front-desk safe
  • Tour and ticket assistance

These facilities make longer stays comfortable without taking away from the main attraction, the open landscape and safari experience around the conservancy.

Safari Activities at Loisaba Tented Camp

Staying at Loisaba Tented Camp gives you much more freedom than a standard vehicle safari. The camp sits within a private conservancy, so your days can include game drives, walking, riding, cycling, fishing and time with the local Samburu community. You can mix these activities throughout your stay rather than spending every morning and afternoon in a safari vehicle.

Game Drives

Game drives are at the heart of a stay at Loisaba and take you across the conservancy’s open plains, rivers and waterholes. These areas support wildlife throughout the year, giving you plenty to look for even outside the main seasonal movements. Morning and afternoon drives can take you into different parts of the conservancy, depending on where the animals are and what you would like to see.

Horse and Camel Riding

Horse and camel rides offer a completely different way to experience the Loisaba landscape. Half-day and full-day rides take you across the conservancy at a slower pace, with the open terrain around you rather than the sides of a safari vehicle. It is a good choice when you want to spend more time outdoors and see the landscape from a different perspective.

Guided Bush Walks

Bush walks are led by qualified Samburu guides who know the land and its smaller details well. On foot, you can pay attention to things that are easy to miss from a vehicle, including animal tracks, droppings, plants, insects and smaller wildlife. If you are staying for several days, a walk also gives your safari a welcome change of pace between game drives.

Mountain Biking and Fishing

For something more active, you can take an escorted mountain bike ride through the conservancy. The terrain gives you a chance to cover parts of Loisaba at a completely different pace while spending more time in the open. Fishing is another option, with the rivers around the Loisaba landscape providing opportunities to spend a quieter part of the day away from the main safari routes.

Samburu Cultural Visits

A stay at Loisaba can also include a visit to a Samburu community. This gives you time to meet local people, learn about their traditions and see a side of Laikipia that goes beyond its wildlife. The cultural visit fits naturally into a longer stay, particularly if you want to balance game viewing with time spent learning about the communities around the conservancy.

Anti-Poaching K-9 Unit Visit

One of the most unusual activities at Loisaba is a visit to the Anti-Poaching K-9 unit. You can meet the dogs and their handlers and see how the team works to protect wildlife across the conservancy. It is a chance to see the conservation work that happens behind the scenes and understand the role these trained dogs and their handlers play in protecting Loisaba’s wildlife.
