Elsa's Kopje, Meru National Park

Elsa’s Kopje sits high on the rocky slopes of Mughwango Hill in Meru National Park, about 348 km northeast of Nairobi. Its position gives you wide views across the surrounding plains, while the lodge itself blends naturally into the rocky hillside. The same setting carries through to the cottages, restaurant, swimming pool and shared areas, giving the whole property a strong connection to the landscape around it. The lodge has just 11 accommodation units, including open-fronted cottages, Honeymoon Suites, a Family Cottage and Elsa’s Private House. Each unit has been built around the natural rock formations on the hillside, giving the rooms their own character and layout rather than making them feel like identical hotel rooms. Meru National Park covers about 870 km², and its 13 rivers bring greener vegetation through parts of the park. Around these waterways and across the open country, you can look out for elephant, lion, hippo, eland, bush pig, waterbuck, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra, along with a wide range of birdlife. From Elsa’s Kopje, the combination of the elevated setting, rocky surroundings and open views gives you a real sense of the landscape before you even head out on a game drive.

Where Is Elsa’s Kopje Located?

Elsa’s Kopje sits high on Mughwango Hill in the heart of Meru National Park, about 348 km northeast of Nairobi. From the lodge, the cottages and main guest areas look out across the open plains below, giving you a real sense of being surrounded by the park. The hillside setting is a big part of what makes Elsa’s Kopje special. The cottages are built around the natural rock of Mughwango Hill rather than laid out across a flat site, so each one has its own character and outlook. You are right in the landscape, with the rocks and surrounding bush becoming part of the setting. Meru National Park stretches across about 870 km² and has 13 rivers running through it from the surrounding mountains. These rivers bring water into different parts of the park, creating greener areas among the wider plains and providing important water sources for animals. Elsa’s Kopje was designed by architect Stefano Cheli and opened in 1999. Its combination of natural rock, hillside views and open bush gives the lodge the character of a true Meru safari retreat.

Cottages and Suites at Elsa’s Kopje

Elsa’s Kopje has 11 accommodation units, each built into the hillside and shaped around the natural rock formations. Rather than following one standard layout, the cottages and suites have their own character and make the most of the views across the Meru plains. The accommodation includes six Open-Fronted Cottages, three Honeymoon Suites, one Two-Bedroom Family Cottage and one Two-Bedroom Private House.

Cottages and Suites at Elsa's Kopje

Open-Fronted Cottages

The six Open-Fronted Cottages combine a spacious bedroom with a sitting area, private veranda and large en-suite bathroom. Outdoor baths or showers are positioned to take in the surrounding views, giving you the chance to enjoy the setting even while relaxing in your room. Five cottages are arranged as doubles and one as a twin. Two of them can also take an additional day bed or extra bed, making them suitable for three guests when needed. With their open-fronted design, these cottages bring the surrounding landscape right into the room while still giving you a private space to relax.

Honeymoon Suites

There are three Honeymoon Suites, each offering a more private setting for couples. Two suites have a main double bedroom, en-suite bathroom, private deck and outdoor bath. The third is a larger three-level suite with its own sitting room, main bedroom, en-suite bathroom and private deck. These suites give couples more space and privacy while keeping the hillside setting at the heart of the stay.

Two-Bedroom Family Cottage

The Family Cottage has two en-suite bedrooms, one double and one twin, with a central living room connecting the two spaces. A large private deck looks out across the surrounding landscape, while an outdoor bath sits beside the master bedroom. It is a practical setup for families who want separate bedrooms while still having a shared space to spend time together.

Elsa’s Private House

Elsa’s Private House offers the greatest level of privacy at the lodge and works particularly well for families or small private groups. The house has an en-suite master bedroom with a dressing room, a second en-suite twin bedroom, a large dining room, sitting room, private garden and private infinity swimming pool. Facing towards Mount Kenya across the plains, the house gives you plenty of space to settle into your own private corner of Elsa’s Kopje without being tied to the main guest areas.

Restaurant and Dining at Elsa’s Kopje

Dining at Elsa’s Kopje is closely tied to the hillside setting. The main dining area sits at the heart of the guest area, with wide views across the Meru plains, and meals can be enjoyed indoors or outside depending on the weather and time of day.

Dining Room and Terrace

You can dine inside the sheltered dining room, on the open terrace or at a private table beneath the stars. This gives meals a different feel throughout the day, from a relaxed breakfast to an evening dinner overlooking the plains. The kitchen focuses on fresh, seasonal food prepared by the lodge’s on-site chef, with the setting adding as much to the occasion as the meal itself.

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea is part of the daily routine at Elsa’s Kopje, with homemade cakes served between activities. It is an easy time to slow down after a morning in the bush, enjoy something sweet and take in the views before heading out again for the afternoon.

Bar and Lounge

The outdoor bar sits beside the lounge and restaurant, sharing the same sweeping views across the Meru plains. Before dinner, guests can settle in for drinks and canapés as the day winds down. The lounge provides a comfortable indoor space for reading, relaxing or enjoying a drink while taking in the landscape.

Swimming Pools, Spa and Other Facilities

Main Infinity Pool

The main infinity pool is built into the rocky face of Mughwango Hill, with wide views stretching across the plains below. It is a beautiful place to slow down between game drives, whether you want to cool off in the afternoon or simply sit by the water and take in the surrounding landscape. The setting keeps you connected to the bush rather than tucked away in a conventional pool area.

Private House Infinity Pool

Guests staying at Elsa’s Private House have their own private infinity pool, separate from the main lodge pool. It gives the house a quieter and more private place to relax while still enjoying the views from the hillside.

Spa, Shop and Laundry

The lodge also has a spa where guests can enjoy massage treatments, along with a small shop and laundry service. Local airstrip transfers are also available, making the journey between the airstrip and lodge straightforward.

A full-board stay covers your accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner, together with soft drinks, beer, house wines, selected spirits, tea, coffee and refreshments at the lodge. Your safari activities can include shared day and night game drives, bush meals, sundowners and line fishing. Local airstrip transfers and laundry service are also included. Champagne, private cellar wines and premium spirits are charged separately. Children of all ages are welcome at Elsa’s Kopje. There are no room rates included here, so it is better to focus on what you receive as part of the stay and confirm the current price when making your booking.

Safari Activities at Elsa’s Kopje

A stay at Elsa’s Kopje gives you more than the usual morning and afternoon game drives. You can head out on day or night drives, explore the landscape on foot, try your hand at fishing, visit a local village, or take time to see the place connected to Elsa’s story and the Born Free history of Meru.

Day and Night Game Drives

Day and night shared game drives are included in the standard rate, giving you the chance to see Meru at different times of the day. On daytime drives, you can look out for African bush elephants, eland, bush pigs, waterbuck, reticulated giraffes and Grevy’s zebras. The park also has plenty for bird lovers, with species such as red-necked falcons and kingfishers adding colour to the drives. Night drives bring a completely different feel to the safari. Once darkness settles over Meru, you leave behind the familiar daytime scenery and see how the park changes after sunset.

Guided Walks

Guided walks offer a quieter way to experience the hillsides and open plains around Elsa’s Kopje. Away from the vehicle, you have more time to notice animal tracks, plants, smaller wildlife and the finer details of the landscape. If you are staying for several nights, a walk is a good way to break up the game drives and see a different side of Meru.

Line Fishing

For something different, you can try line fishing along the rivers of Meru. Catfish, tilapia, and barbel are among the fish you can catch. It is a relaxed activity and a nice change of pace from spending the whole day in a safari vehicle.

Cultural Visits

A visit to a local village can also be arranged during your stay. It adds a cultural side to the safari, giving you time away from the game-viewing areas and an opportunity to connect with people living around Meru.

Visit to Elsa’s Grave

You can also visit Elsa’s grave with a guide. For travellers who know the Born Free story, this is a particularly meaningful stop and adds context to the history behind Elsa’s Kopje. It is best suited to guests who have an interest in Elsa’s story and the history of the area rather than simply looking for another sightseeing stop.

Sundowners and Bush Meals

Sundowners and bush meals add a more relaxed touch to your time at Elsa’s Kopje. You can settle into the landscape as the evening light changes across the plains, or enjoy a meal out in the bush rather than returning straight to the lodge. Both sundowners and bush meals are included in the Full Board package described for the property.
