Mahali Mzuri, Olare Motorogi Conservancy
Mahali Mzuri sits high on a ridge overlooking a quiet valley in the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy, with wide views across the Maasai Mara landscape in southwest Kenya. The name means “beautiful place” in Swahili, and it fits the setting well. The camp is surrounded by open plains and wooded slopes, with wildlife moving through the conservancy below. The Olare Motorogi Conservancy covers about 13,500 hectares and has only a small number of safari camps, giving Mahali Mzuri a quieter setting away from the heavier vehicle traffic found in some parts of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Game viewing here feels more relaxed, with plenty of room to enjoy the landscape without the crowds you can encounter in busier areas. The camp has 12 luxury tented suites, each set along the ridge to take advantage of the valley views. Days are centred around game drives, including night drives, guided walking safaris and off-road wildlife viewing. Back at camp, you can slow things down with a meal, spend time at the open bar, enjoy a spa treatment or take a swim while looking out across the valley. It is the kind of camp where the wildlife and the setting remain the main attraction, but there is plenty of comfort waiting for you when you return from the bush.
Where Is Mahali Mzuri Located?
Mahali Mzuri sits within the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, on private land adjoining the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The conservancy covers about 13,500 hectares, giving the camp a large private area for game viewing while keeping it connected to the wider Mara ecosystem. The camp is set on a lightly wooded hillside overlooking a valley, with the tents arranged along the ridge so you have open views across the landscape. From this position, you are surrounded by the kind of scenery that makes the Mara such a rewarding place to stay. One of the biggest advantages of staying here is the quieter game-viewing environment. With only a small number of camps operating within the conservancy, game drives tend to have far less vehicle congestion than you can encounter in some of the busier parts of the Mara. This gives you more space to watch animals without a long line of vehicles gathering around a sighting. The conservancy is also home to several lion prides whose territories overlap within the area. Elephants, wildebeest, zebra, leopards, cheetahs and giraffes are also part of the wildlife you can encounter around the conservancy, making the location particularly appealing for travellers who want to spend their safari time in a private and less crowded setting.
Luxury Tented Suites at Mahali Mzuri
Mahali Mzuri has 12 luxury tented suites, set along a ridge overlooking the valley and surrounding plains. The position of the camp means each tent has wide views of the landscape, with the private deck forming an important part of the stay.
Luxury Tented Suites
Each tent covers about 106 square metres, including the outdoor deck, giving you plenty of room to relax during the quieter parts of the day. The design combines a spacious sleeping area with a comfortable sitting space, so the tent feels like a private retreat rather than somewhere you simply return to at night. Inside, you have a spacious sitting area, en-suite bathroom, work desk, mini fridge and leather lounge furniture. Large windows and doors open directly onto the deck, while the clawfoot soaking bathtub adds another comfortable place to unwind after a day in the Mara. The private deck is one of the highlights of the accommodation. It opens towards the plains and valley below, giving you a quiet place to sit, take in the surroundings and enjoy the changing views throughout the day.

Family Tents
Two of the 12 suites can be arranged for families. The main bedroom has a king-size four-poster bed, while the living room can be converted into a separate sleeping area with twin beds for two children. This arrangement gives families extra sleeping space while keeping the spacious feel and character of the main tent. Children aged two years and above are welcome at Mahali Mzuri, with family-friendly activities including treasure hunts, evening movie screenings and swimming. The family setup means the camp can accommodate children comfortably without making the tent feel like a completely different type of room.
In-Room Amenities
The suites come with a complimentary minibar, snacks, tea and coffee facilities, a hairdryer, sunscreen and insect repellent. You also have torches, extra blankets, ponchos, bathrobes, slippers and hot-water bottles in the room. The extra blankets and hot-water bottles are particularly useful during the cooler Mara evenings and early mornings, when temperatures can drop before the day warms up.
Restaurants and Dining at Mahali Mzuri
Dining at Mahali Mzuri is fully inclusive, with meals and drinks included as part of your stay. This makes things simple during your time at camp, as you can enjoy your meals and drinks without having to treat each one as an additional expense.
Main Dining Room
The main dining room sits inside one of the camp’s two large canvas-and-metal structures at the top of the property. It keeps the feel of a traditional safari tent but with a more contemporary design, exposed metal framing, open spaces and views across the surrounding plains. Meals bring together African flavours and familiar international dishes, giving guests a varied choice throughout their stay.
Lounge and Open Bar
The second main structure houses the lounge and open bar, providing a relaxed place to spend time between meals and activities. The open-bar setup adds to the informal feel of the camp, making the space comfortable for sitting with a drink, chatting with other guests, or simply taking in the views from the ridge. Rather than feeling like a conventional hotel bar, the lounge works as part of the camp’s shared living space, where you can settle in before dinner, return after a game drive, or spend a quiet part of the afternoon watching the landscape.
Pool, Spa and Other Camp Facilities
Mahali Mzuri has a swimming pool where guests can relax between safari activities, whether you want to cool off after a game drive or simply spend some quiet time at camp. The camp also offers spa and wellness treatments for guests looking to unwind during their stay. Other facilities and experiences include Wi-Fi throughout the camp, in-room refreshments, a complimentary minibar, and tea and coffee. After sunset, the low-light setting of the conservancy creates excellent conditions for stargazing, giving guests another way to enjoy the wilderness once the day’s safari activities are over. The camp’s safari experience is supported by expert Maasai guides and trackers, while community and Maasai village visits can be arranged at an additional cost.

Safari Activities at Mahali Mzuri
Mahali Mzuri sits within a private conservancy, giving guests more freedom to enjoy the Mara beyond the usual daytime game drive. Days here can include morning and afternoon game drives, night drives, walking safaris, off-road wildlife viewing, and time with the local Maasai community. There are also additional activities for guests who want to see the Mara from a different perspective.
Morning, Afternoon and Night Game Drives
Game drives are at the heart of a stay at Mahali Mzuri. Maasai guides take guests out in 4×4 safari vehicles in the morning and afternoon, when the conservancy is at its most active. Night drives are also part of the stay, giving you a chance to see what happens after sunset when many animals become active. Depending on the season and where the animals are moving, you may encounter lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, cheetah, zebra and hyena. During the migration season, large herds can also move through the wider Mara landscape.
Walking Safaris
Walking safaris offer a completely different way to experience the conservancy. Away from the vehicle, your attention shifts to animal tracks, birds, plants and the smaller details that are easy to miss on a game drive. You may come across giraffe, impala and elephant while walking, but the experience is about much more than ticking off animal sightings. It is a slower way to understand the landscape and the signs left behind by the animals moving through it.
Off-Road Game Viewing
The private conservancy setting gives guides greater freedom to take vehicles off the main tracks when conditions and wildlife movements allow. This is particularly useful when following animals that have moved away from the usual driving routes, allowing the guide to position the vehicle closer to the action while respecting the surrounding environment.
Hot Air Balloon Safaris
For a completely different view of the Mara, guests can take a hot air balloon safari at an additional cost. Flights take place around dawn, when the landscape is still quiet and the first light spreads across the plains. From above, the Mara takes on a different character, with wildlife, open grasslands and winding tracks stretching out below. The balloon safari is not included in the standard stay and is arranged as an additional experience.
Maasai Cultural Visits
A stay at Mahali Mzuri can also include time with the local Maasai community. These visits take you beyond the wildlife and into the lives and traditions of the people who call the Mara region home. Depending on the arrangement, guests can spend time in the community, learn about daily life and gain a closer understanding of the Maasai culture and its connection to the surrounding landscape. These visits are offered at an additional cost.
Family Activities
Families have activities to enjoy at camp between safari outings. Children can take part in treasure hunts, enjoy evening movie screenings and spend time swimming in the camp pool. These activities give younger guests their own way to enjoy the stay while parents take advantage of the main safari experiences.
Great Migration at Mahali Mzuri
Mahali Mzuri sits within the wider Maasai Mara ecosystem, placing it in a prime area for following the Great Migration when the herds move through the Mara between July and October. During these months, thousands of wildebeest and other grazing animals move across the wider landscape, while increased predator activity can add another exciting element to game drives. The migration is not the only reason to visit Mahali Mzuri, though. The Olare Motorogi Conservancy has resident wildlife throughout the year, so game drives continue to offer excellent opportunities outside the main migration season. Visiting outside July to October can also mean a quieter safari, while the migration months bring the added spectacle of large herds moving through the Mara.
