Chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda takes you into the mountain rainforests of Nyungwe Forest National Park and Cyamudongo Forest. Faster and noisier than gorilla trekking, it's an energetic early-morning primate experience — and it combines perfectly with Nyungwe's canopy walk, monkeys and birding.

Good to Know

Planning your Rwanda chimp trek

What happens on a Rwanda chimp trek
Treks start very early because chimps leave their nests soon after sunrise. After a pre-dawn breakfast you transfer to the reception point for briefing and registration, then follow ranger guides into the forest. Once the group is found, you spend one hour with them.
Rwanda chimpanzee permit prices
Permits are set by the Rwanda Development Board and vary by visitor category, giving access to the guided trek and one hour with the chimps. Rates can change, so confirm before booking — and note transport, accommodation, porter fees and tips are separate. We package it all into one quote.
Rwanda vs Uganda chimpanzee trekking
Rwanda suits travellers combining chimps with Kigali, Nyungwe, Lake Kivu and Volcanoes gorillas. Uganda (Kibale) is better for more reliable, dedicated chimp trekking and the four-hour habituation experience. We often combine both countries.
Getting to Nyungwe from Kigali
Nyungwe is in Rwanda's far south-west, roughly a 5–6 hour scenic drive from Kigali (often broken with a stop). It pairs naturally with Lake Kivu and can be reached en route to or from Volcanoes National Park.
Best time & what to wear
The drier months give firmer trails; the wetter season is green and quieter but muddier. Wear neutral long sleeves and trousers, sturdy waterproof boots, a rain jacket, gloves and insect repellent, and carry a daypack with water. The minimum age is generally 15.
