Detailed Itinerary
Day 1, Ziwa Rhino Tracking and Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park
The journey starts at 6:30 am from Kampala or Entebbe to avoid morning traffic and reach the rhinos before the midday heat. You drive north through Luweero towards Nakasongola. The road is paved and generally smooth, passing through small towns, roadside markets and rural trading centres. The drive to Ziwa takes about 3 hours. Around 10:00 am, you arrive at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This is a 70 square kilometre protected area and the only place in Uganda where southern white rhinos can be tracked on foot. You will join a ranger for a short briefing before tracking begins. You may drive a short distance to where the rhinos were last seen, then continue on foot. The tracking experience usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Seeing these large animals up close in a natural setting is one of the most memorable parts of the safari.

After the activity, you have lunch at Amuka Safari Lodge or a nearby local restaurant, depending on your budget preference. After lunch, continue to Murchison Falls National Park. You enter through the Kichumbanyobo Gate and continue towards your lodge. The landscape gradually changes from farmland and woodland to thicker forest and savannah as you approach the park. Arrival is usually around 5:00 pm, depending on road conditions and stops along the way. Accommodation options: Red Chilli Rest Camp, a budget option inside the park near Paraa, a good location for early game drives or Hornbill Bush Lodge, a budget option near Tangi Gate with views towards the park boundary
Day 2, Sunrise Game Drive and Nile Boat Cruise in Murchison Falls
This is the main wildlife viewing day of your safari. You start early at 6:00 am for a sunrise game drive on the northern bank of the park. This area has open grasslands and Borassus palm trees, making it one of the best locations for wildlife viewing in Uganda. During the game drive, your guide will search for lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and Rothschild giraffes. Murchison Falls National Park holds one of the largest populations of Rothschild giraffes in Africa. You may also see Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, oribi and warthogs. The early morning hours offer the best chance to see predators before they retreat into cover due to the heat. By late morning, you return to the lodge for lunch and rest.

In the afternoon, you head out for the Nile boat cruise. This trip runs along the Victoria Nile towards the base of the falls and takes about three hours. Along the riverbanks, you are likely to see large groups of hippos, Nile crocodiles resting in the sun, elephants drinking at the water’s edge and a variety of bird species. The boat stops at a safe distance from the base of Murchison Falls, where the Nile forces through a narrow gorge. The sound and mist from the falls can be experienced from the boat. If you are physically fit, you can choose the optional hike from the base to the top of the falls. This takes about 45 minutes and gives a closer view of the power of the water. Your driver guide will meet you at the top. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3, Morning Activity and Return to Kampala or Entebbe
After breakfast, you can choose between a short morning game drive or a visit to the top of Murchison Falls if you did not do it the previous day. A morning game drive offers another chance to see wildlife that may have been missed earlier, especially predators that are active during cooler hours. After the activity, you exit the park and begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. The drive takes about 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. A lunch stop is usually made in Masindi town. Arrival in Kampala or Entebbe is expected in the late afternoon. For travellers with flights on the same day, it is recommended to book departures from 9:00 pm onwards to allow enough time for the journey and any unexpected delays.
