5 Day Mgahinga Gorilla and Golden Monkey Safari
A 5-day Mgahinga gorilla and golden monkey safari is designed for travellers who want a focused primate experience in one of Uganda’s most scenic mountain parks. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes and offers gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, Batwa cultural history and views of Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo. This safari gives you time to track the Nyakagezi gorilla family, spend a separate day with golden monkeys in the bamboo zone and walk the Batwa Trail to Garama Cave. Compared with busier gorilla routes, Mgahinga offers a quieter setting, open bamboo forest and strong mountain scenery. The trip can start from Entebbe for the classic Uganda overland route or from Kigali for a shorter cross-border drive to Kisoro.

Detailed 5-Day Itinerary
Day 1, Transfer to Mgahinga from Entebbe or Kigali
Your driver guide will pick you up from Entebbe, Kampala or Kigali, depending on your chosen start point. Option A, Entebbe or Kampala Route: If starting from Entebbe or Kampala, the drive to Kisoro takes about 9 to 10 hours. This is a long road transfer, so an early departure is important. You travel southwest through the Uganda Equator at Kayabwe, Mbarara and the Kigezi highlands. Lunch can be arranged at Igongo Cultural Centre or another suitable stop along the route. The final section climbs into highland scenery with terraced farms, cool air and mountain views. Arrival at your lodge is expected in the evening.

Option B, Kigali Route: If starting from Kigali, the drive to Kisoro and Mgahinga is shorter, usually about 4 to 5 hours depending on border clearance and road conditions. Your guide will pick you up from Kigali International Airport or your hotel, then drive north towards Cyanika or Katuna border. After crossing into Uganda, continue to your lodge near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. This route works well for travellers who want to reduce road time while still trekking gorillas in Uganda. Accommodation options: Luxury option: Mount Gahinga Lodge, Mid-range option: Lake Mulehe Safari Lodge, Budget option: Travellers Rest Hotel
Day 2, Gorilla Trekking with the Nyakagezi Family
After an early breakfast, transfer to Ntebeko Park Headquarters for the gorilla trekking briefing. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers will check permits, explain the trekking rules and guide visitors on how to behave around gorillas. The briefing covers group allocation, forest safety, photography rules and the recommended viewing distance. You then begin the trek with rangers and trackers. The trail can pass through bamboo forest, slopes, muddy sections and highland vegetation. The trek may take 2 to 4 hours or longer depending on the location of the gorillas and forest conditions. The Nyakagezi gorilla family is the habituated group visited in Mgahinga. Once the gorillas are found, you spend one hour observing them as they feed, rest, groom and move through the forest. After the trek, return to the park headquarters, then transfer back to your lodge for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3, Golden Monkey Tracking in Mgahinga
After breakfast, return to Ntebeko Park Headquarters for your golden monkey tracking briefing. Golden monkeys live in the bamboo zone of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and are one of the key primate highlights of the Virunga region. This activity is usually less physically demanding than gorilla trekking, although the pace can change because golden monkeys move quickly through the bamboo. You enter the forest with ranger guides and search for a habituated golden monkey troop. Once located, you spend one hour observing them as they feed, climb, leap between bamboo stems and interact within the group. The golden-orange colour of the monkeys contrasts strongly with the green bamboo, making this a good activity for photographers who are ready for fast movement and low forest light. After the activity, return to the lodge for lunch and a relaxed afternoon.
Day 4, Batwa Trail and Garama Cave Experience
After breakfast, take part in the Batwa Trail experience near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The Batwa people lived in the forest for generations before the area became a national park. Today, Batwa guides share parts of their forest history, traditional knowledge and cultural practices through guided interpretation. During the walk, you may learn about medicinal plants, fire making, honey gathering, hunting tools, forest movement and traditional ways of living around the Virunga landscape. The trail also includes Garama Cave, an important cultural site linked to Batwa history. The cave visit adds context to the landscape and helps travellers understand the human story connected to Mgahinga beyond gorilla and golden monkey tracking. Return to the lodge in the afternoon for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5, Return to Kigali or Entebbe
After breakfast, begin the return journey based on your chosen route. If returning to Kigali, cross back into Rwanda through Cyanika or Katuna border and continue to Kigali city or Kigali International Airport. Depending on your flight time, a short Kigali city visit or Gisozi Genocide Memorial visit can be arranged. If returning to Entebbe or Kampala, start early because the drive is long. A lunch stop can be arranged at Igongo Cultural Centre or another suitable stop along the route. Arrival in Entebbe is expected in the late afternoon or evening, depending on traffic and road conditions. Travellers flying out the same day should choose an evening or night flight.
