Sayari Camp, Northern Serengeti

Sayari Camp sits close to the Mara River in the remote northern Serengeti, putting you close to one of the most dramatic parts of the Great Migration. When the herds reach this northern section of Tanzania, the camp gives you easy access to the river-crossing areas without the long morning drive required from camps farther south. The Great Migration is not the only reason to stay here. From November to March, the northern Serengeti becomes much quieter, but resident lions, leopards, cheetahs and other wildlife continue to roam the surrounding plains. This gives Sayari a different character throughout the year, with the excitement of the migration during the peak months and a quieter, more secluded safari atmosphere once the herds have moved on. The camp has 15 tented suites and two private Retreat units, with intimate dining spaces, a swimming pool and a fully solar-powered setup. Its remote location, close access to the Mara River and comfortable tented accommodation make it a strong choice for travellers looking to stay in the northern Serengeti.

Where Is Sayari Camp Located?

Sayari Camp sits in the northern Serengeti, close to the Mara River, inside Serengeti National Park. Its position makes it a particularly good base for travellers visiting during the Great Migration, when large herds move through the northern plains and towards the Mara River between roughly July and October. The biggest advantage is the location itself. When the wildebeest reach the northern Serengeti, you are already in the right part of the park. There is no need to spend hours driving up from Seronera before starting your search for the herds and the river crossings. The northern Serengeti also has a different feel outside the main migration months. From November to March, the area is much quieter, with fewer vehicles and a good chance of seeing resident wildlife, including lions, leopards, cheetahs and black rhinos. For travellers who prefer peaceful game drives and more space in the bush, this can be just as appealing as visiting during the migration. Since Sayari Camp is inside Serengeti National Park, night game drives and off-road driving are not permitted. Game drives therefore follow the park’s regulations and take place during the permitted hours.

Why the Northern Serengeti Location Matters

The northern Serengeti is less developed and sees fewer vehicles than the busy Seronera area in central Serengeti. That difference becomes very noticeable during the Great Migration. River crossings can attract many safari vehicles, but staying in the north puts you much closer to the Mara River and the surrounding migration routes. You spend less time travelling between regions and more time in the area where the action is taking place. Outside the migration season, the same location offers a completely different safari. The northern Serengeti remains home to resident wildlife throughout the year, while the lower number of visitors creates more space and quieter game drives. It is a good choice for travellers who want to enjoy the Serengeti itself rather than coming only for the famous wildebeest crossings.

Tented Suites and Sayari Retreats

Sayari has 15 luxury tented suites and two private Retreats, giving guests a choice between staying in the main camp or having a more private setup for their family or group. The main camp is arranged across two wings, which keeps the atmosphere intimate and avoids having all the guest areas centred around one large communal space.

Luxury Tented Suites

The tented suites give you the feeling of being in the bush while still offering the comfort you would expect from a luxury lodge. Inside, mahogany floors run through the rooms, with king-size or twin beds dressed in fine linens and colourful cushions. The bathrooms are particularly spacious. You have a walk-in shower, a freestanding bathtub positioned to face the Serengeti, and a private outdoor shower on the deck. Step outside onto your large private veranda and the northern Serengeti becomes part of the room, with wide views across the surrounding landscape. The interiors keep a clean, uncluttered feel, with African details adding warmth without taking attention away from the setting. The elevated canvas tents and generous wooden decks make it easy to sit outside and take in the scenery between activities.

Two-Bedroom Family Suite

Families have a dedicated two-bedroom suite that accommodates two adults and up to three children under 16. The main bedroom has a king-size bed, a walk-in shower, a large bathtub facing the Serengeti and its own private veranda. Children aged five and above are welcome at Sayari.

Sayari Retreats

If you are travelling as a family or group and want more privacy, the two Sayari Retreats offer a much more self-contained stay. Each Retreat comes with its own private chef, dedicated guide, exclusive safari vehicle and private host. Large private decks give you plenty of space to relax, while Retreat guests also have access to their own shared swimming pool. You still remain in the same northern Serengeti setting, but with your own space, team and vehicle rather than sharing these parts of the safari with the wider camp.

Restaurants and Dining at Sayari Camp

Sayari’s two-wing layout carries through to its dining spaces. Each wing has its own dining tent, so meals feel smaller and more relaxed rather than bringing the entire camp together in one large restaurant. Meals and house drinks are included in the Game Package. The food combines African and European influences, with dining taking place in the tented dining areas or, on selected occasions, outside beneath the northern Serengeti sky.

Bush Dinners and Dining Under the Stars

A bush dinner adds another dimension to an evening at Sayari. Instead of returning to the dining tent after the day’s game drive, you can sit outside beneath the open Serengeti sky and enjoy your meal surrounded by the landscape. Later, the evening can continue in the common areas with a book and a drink, around the fireplace or beside the campfire, where guests can relax and talk about the day’s sightings.

Bar, Lounge and Solar-Powered Micro-Brewery

The main guest areas include a bar, library and lounge, giving you several places to settle down between safari activities. Sayari also has its own solar-powered micro-brewery, where beer is produced at camp. It is a distinctive touch that fits naturally into the camp’s relaxed atmosphere. As the evening settles in, guests can move between the bar, lounge, fireplace and outdoor campfire at their own pace, with no need for a formal hotel-style programme.

Swimming Pools and Camp Facilities

Sayari has a main swimming pool shared by the two main camp wings, giving guests a comfortable place to cool off between safari activities.

Main Infinity Pool

The main pool is an infinity-style, rim-flow pool with views across the Serengeti. It is a good spot to relax during the warmer part of the day, whether you have just returned from a morning game drive or are waiting for the afternoon activity. The two main camp wings share this pool, so each wing does not have its own separate swimming pool.

Private Retreat Pool

Guests staying in the two Sayari Retreat units have a separate swimming pool reserved for the Retreat area. The two Retreat units share this pool, giving this part of the camp a more private setting. For families or groups taking both Retreat units, having a dedicated pool makes it easier to enjoy time together away from the main camp areas.

Library, Lounge and Campfire

When you are not out on safari, Sayari has a library, lounge and bar where you can settle in and relax. In the evening, guests naturally gather around the campfire after returning from the day’s activities, creating a relaxed setting to share stories and enjoy the surroundings. The communal spaces give Sayari a friendly social atmosphere while keeping the feel of a small safari camp rather than a large resort.

What the Game Package Includes

The standard Game Package gives you a full safari stay without having to arrange the main essentials separately. It includes full-board accommodation, house drinks, limited laundry, game drives, short nature walks, and transfers between the nearest airstrip and the camp. This makes the package straightforward for travellers who want their accommodation, meals, safari activities, and airport transfers covered as part of their stay.

What the Sayari Retreat Package Includes

The Sayari Retreat package takes things a step further, with a more private setup suited to families and groups travelling together. Along with full-board accommodation, house drinks, limited laundry, and airstrip transfers, the package includes a private game-drive vehicle, a dedicated guide, private chef, and a personal host. Walking safaris are also included between June 1 and January 15. House drinks are included, although premium wines and champagne are excluded. The main difference is the level of privacy. With your own vehicle, guide, chef, and host, the Retreat package gives families and groups more freedom over how they spend their time, from game drives and meals to the overall pace of their stay.

Safari Activities at Sayari Camp

Wildlife viewing is at the heart of a stay at Sayari Camp, particularly during the northern migration season when huge herds of wildebeest and zebra move through the Serengeti.

Guided Game Drives

Game drives are the main way to explore the surrounding plains, with two drives usually offered each day in open-sided 4×4 safari vehicles. Your local guide takes you out early in the morning when temperatures are cooler, and predators are more active, then again in the afternoon as the heat starts to ease. The northern Serengeti is home to lion, leopard and cheetah, while the seasonal movement of wildebeest and zebra can transform the landscape during migration months. The timing of each drive also gives you the chance to see the plains under very different conditions, from the cool early morning to the softer light of late afternoon.

Mara River Crossings and the Great Migration

For many travellers, the Great Migration is the main reason to choose Sayari. The herds begin moving into the wider northern Serengeti from around June, with July to October bringing the period most closely associated with the Mara River crossings. July, August and September are particularly good months for being in the area, although crossings can continue into October. The Mara River is also home to hippos and crocodiles, so there is plenty to watch even when the herds are not crossing. A river crossing cannot be timed like a scheduled safari activity. The herds may gather at the river, wait for hours, turn back, or cross without warning. Sayari’s position close to the migration route puts you in the right area to follow the movement of the herds and spend more time around the river during this season.

Nature Walks and Walking Safaris

Walking offers a completely different way to experience the northern Serengeti. Away from the vehicle, you can slow down and pay attention to the smaller details of the landscape, tracks, plants, insects and animal signs that are easy to miss on a game drive. Walking safaris have a minimum age of 12 years. Short nature walks are included with the standard Game Package, while the Sayari Retreat package includes walking safaris between June 1 and January 15. If walking is an important part of your safari, check the package carefully when booking, as the full walking-safari programme is not included in every stay at the main camp.
