Singita Sasakwa Lodge, Grumeti Reserve

Singita Sasakwa Lodge sits high above Tanzania’s Grumeti Reserve, with wide views stretching across the surrounding wilderness towards the distant Serengeti plains. The hilltop position gives Sasakwa a character of its own. The views are expansive, the cottages feel wonderfully private, and the main lodge has the atmosphere of an elegant country estate rather than a conventional safari camp. There are ten private cottages and a separate Hillside Suite, with fine dining, an extensive wine programme, a spa, fitness facilities and tennis all available at the lodge. It is a place where comfort and space are given as much attention as the safari itself. Privacy is one of Sasakwa’s strongest features. Every cottage has its own heated infinity plunge pool. At the same time, the private setting within the Grumeti Reserve gives you room to enjoy game drives, guided walks and other safari activities without the feel of a crowded wildlife area.

Where Is Singita Sasakwa Lodge Located?

Singita Sasakwa Lodge sits on a hill within the 350,000-acre Grumeti Reserve in Tanzania’s western Serengeti. Its elevated position gives the lodge wide views across the reserve and towards the open Serengeti plains, making the setting a major part of the stay. The lodge is also well placed for travellers following the Great Migration. From around May to July, the herds move through the Grumeti area as they continue their journey north, bringing the migration closer to this part of the Serengeti ecosystem. The Grumeti Reserve also has an important conservation story. Through its work with the Grumeti Fund, Singita has been involved in restoring wildlife populations affected by earlier pressures such as illegal hunting, wildfires and invasive vegetation. This conservation work has also included the reintroduction of Eastern Black Rhinos into the reserve.

Cottages and Hillside Suite at Singita Sasakwa Lodge

Singita Sasakwa Lodge has 10 private cottages, with one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom options. Each cottage is designed as a private retreat, giving you your own space to relax, enjoy the views and spend time away from the main lodge.

Private Cottages

The cottages make the most of Sasakwa’s hilltop setting, with each one having its own heated infinity plunge pool overlooking the surrounding plains. Inside, there is a spacious bedroom, en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower, a lounge with a fireplace, a dressing area and a separate guest toilet. The private veranda gives you another place to sit and take in the views. A Swarovski spotting scope is provided, so you can spend time watching wildlife across the plains without leaving your cottage. Other facilities include:

  • Heated infinity plunge pool
  • En-suite bathroom with bath and shower
  • Lounge with fireplace
  • Dressing area
  • Separate guest toilet
  • Private veranda
  • Swarovski spotting scope
  • Personal bar and refrigerator
  • Electronic safe
  • Direct-dial telephone

The result is accommodation that feels completely private, with plenty of space to settle in after a day on safari.

Family Cottages

Four of the accommodation units are set up as family cottages. With one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom configurations across the property, Sasakwa gives families and larger groups several options when choosing their accommodation. The exact bedroom configuration of the four family cottages is not specified here, so it is best to confirm the layout when making a booking.

Hillside Suite

The Hillside Suite sits a short distance from the main lodge and has its own access road, giving it a particularly private setting. It is designed for two guests and works especially well for couples and honeymooners who want their own space. The suite has an en-suite bedroom with floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto two extended wooden decks. Outside, there is a private swimming pool, while inside you also have a signature Singita bar-deli. Its separate position away from the main cottage area makes the Hillside Suite a good choice when privacy is a priority.

Restaurants and Dining at Singita Sasakwa Lodge

Dining at Sasakwa has a European influence, but meals are not confined to one formal dining room. The setting changes throughout the day, allowing you to enjoy different parts of the lodge and its surroundings.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Breakfast starts with a buffet, while lunch and dinner are served à la carte. When the weather allows, lunch can be enjoyed out on the lawns, where the hilltop position opens up wide views across the surrounding plains. In the evening, dinner can move into the courtyard, creating an open-air setting beneath the night sky. There is also an interactive show kitchen, giving the dining experience a more engaging feel.

Bar and Wine Cellar

The wood-panelled bar fits naturally into Sasakwa’s country-house character. It is a relaxed place to sit down for a drink or a game of snooker, with butler service adding a more personal touch to your time at the lodge. Wine is also an important part of the dining experience. Sasakwa has a temperature-controlled wine cellar stocked with premium bottles that guests can taste and purchase.

Wine-Paired Dining

For wine lovers, the lodge also offers wine-paired dinners. Selected wines are matched with the evening’s dishes, making dinner more than simply a meal after a day in the bush. It is an opportunity to slow down, enjoy the food and wine, and make the most of the evening at Sasakwa.

Spa, Wellness and Other Lodge Facilities

Sasakwa offers much more to do between game drives than you would expect from a traditional safari camp. The lodge has a spa and wellness centre, a fully equipped gym, tennis courts, a boutique and an African art gallery, giving you plenty of ways to spend your time when you are not out in the Serengeti.

Spa and Fitness Centre

The spa and wellness centre is a good place to unwind between your morning and afternoon safari activities, while the fitness centre and gym give you somewhere to keep up with your usual routine during your stay.

Yoga and Couples’ Treatments

Yoga is also part of the wellness experience at Sasakwa. The Hillside Suite is particularly well suited to this, with private indoor and outdoor spaces where you can practise yoga or enjoy a spa treatment without leaving the comfort of your suite. Couples can also arrange massages in a more private setting, making the suite a good choice when relaxation and privacy are an important part of the stay.

Tennis, Boutique and Gallery

If you want to stay active, tennis courts are available on the property and provide another way to spend an afternoon between game drives. You can also browse the lodge boutique or spend some time in the gallery, where African art and curios add to the character of the property.

Safari Activities at Singita Sasakwa Lodge

Singita Sasakwa Lodge offers a wide range of safari activities, from classic game drives and walking safaris to conservation visits, community experiences and more active adventures. This gives guests plenty of ways to enjoy the Grumeti Reserve, whether you prefer exploring by vehicle, walking through the bush or seeing the landscape from above.

Game Drives and Private 4×4 Safaris

Game drives are available throughout the year, with opportunities to look for the Big Five alongside many of the smaller and less frequently seen species, including bat-eared foxes. For families and private groups, exclusive 4×4 vehicles can be reserved for your safari. This gives you the freedom to set your own pace, spend more time at sightings that interest you and enjoy the game drives without sharing the vehicle with other lodge guests.

Guided Safari Walks

A guided safari walk lets you experience the reserve from a completely different perspective. Once you leave the vehicle and walk through the bush, the smaller details become part of the safari, from animal tracks and vegetation to smaller wildlife and the changing landscape around you.

Seasonal Equestrian Safaris

For something more active, Sasakwa also offers seasonal equestrian safaris. The riding programme can vary, so it is best to confirm the available dates, age requirements and riding experience needed when arranging your stay.

Anti-Poaching Observation Post

A visit to the Anti-Poaching Observation Post takes you to a hill overlooking the reserve, where you can learn more about the conservation work carried out across Grumeti and the role of the scouts protecting the area. The elevated position also makes this a particularly good place to watch the sunset, with wide views across the surrounding landscape.

Community Experiences

Community experiences connect your stay at Sasakwa with the people living around the reserve. Through programmes supported by the Grumeti Fund, guests can learn about initiatives focused on education, healthcare and sustainable livelihoods in surrounding communities. These visits are arranged as part of the lodge’s activities and come at an additional cost.

Birdwatching and Hot Air Balloon Safaris

Birdwatching can start right around the lodge and continue throughout your safari as you move through different parts of the reserve. It is a rewarding option for guests who enjoy looking beyond the larger animals and paying attention to the smaller species around them. For a completely different view of the Serengeti landscape, a hot air balloon safari takes you above the plains at dawn, offering a bird’s-eye perspective as the day begins.
