3 Day Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking Safari
A 3-day Kibale chimpanzee trekking safari is one of the best short Uganda primate trips for travellers who want to see chimpanzees in the wild without taking a long safari. This tour takes you to Kibale Forest National Park, Uganda’s leading chimpanzee trekking destination, with guided walks starting from Kanyanchu Visitor Centre. The safari starts from Kampala or Entebbe and follows the western Uganda route to Fort Portal. Along the way, you pass rural towns, tea plantations, crater lake landscapes and forested hills before reaching the Kibale region. The main highlight is chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, where Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers guide small groups into the forest to search for a habituated chimpanzee community.

Day 2, Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest and Bigodi Wetland Walk
After an early breakfast, transfer to Kanyanchu Visitor Centre for your chimpanzee trekking briefing. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers will explain the forest rules, group allocation, safety guidance and what to expect during the trek. You then enter Kibale Forest with guides and trackers to search for a habituated chimpanzee community. The trek usually takes about 2 to 4 hours, depending on where the chimpanzees are feeding or moving. Once the chimpanzees are found, you spend up to one hour observing them. During this time, you may see them feeding, calling, grooming, resting or moving through the forest canopy.

Travellers who want a longer primate experience can request the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience. This upgrade allows more time with a semi-habituated chimpanzee community and must be booked in advance because spaces are limited. After lunch, continue to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided nature and community walk. Bigodi is known for wetland birds, butterflies, monkeys and community tourism. You may see red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys and bird species such as the great blue turaco. Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3, Ndali-Kasenda Crater Lakes, Amabere Caves and Return
After breakfast, check out and begin the final day with a visit to the Ndali-Kasenda crater lakes region. This area is known for scenic crater lakes, rolling hills, farms and small communities. The drive adds landscape value to the safari and gives you a wider view of the Fort Portal region beyond Kibale Forest. You may also visit Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru caves, a cultural and geological site linked to Toro oral history. The site features caves, rock formations, waterfalls and local storytelling. After the visit, begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. The drive takes about 5 to 6 hours, depending on road conditions and traffic. Arrival is expected in the late afternoon or evening. For same-day international flights, choose a late evening departure to allow enough time for the transfer.
