3 Day Bwindi Gorilla Habituation Safari from Kigali

A 3-day Bwindi gorilla habituation safari from Kigali is designed for travellers who want more time with mountain gorillas than the standard one-hour gorilla trek. This safari starts in Kigali, crosses into Uganda and takes you to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where the gorilla habituation experience is conducted. The habituation experience allows visitors to spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family under the guidance of rangers, trackers and researchers. It is more immersive than standard gorilla trekking and is ideal for photographers, wildlife enthusiasts and travellers who want a deeper understanding of gorilla behaviour and conservation work. Starting from Kigali keeps the road transfer shorter than the Entebbe route, with a drive of about 4 to 5 hours to southern Bwindi.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1, Kigali to Bwindi Through Cyanika or Katuna Border

Your driver guide will pick you up from your Kigali hotel or Kigali International Airport and begin the transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The drive takes about 4 to 5 hours, depending on the border process, road conditions and your lodge location. The route passes through Rwanda’s rolling hills before crossing into Uganda through Cyanika or Katuna border. After border clearance, continue through the Kigezi highlands towards the Rushaga sector of Bwindi. The landscape changes to terraced hills, cool highland air and forested slopes as you approach the park. Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon, check in and relax. Your guide will brief you about the next day’s gorilla habituation experience, including reporting time, what to carry and how to prepare for a longer day in the forest. Accommodation options: Budget option Rushaga Haven Lodge, Mid-range option Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, Luxury option Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge

Day 2, Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga Sector

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Rushaga sector headquarters with your packed lunch and drinking water. You will attend a briefing led by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. The briefing covers forest rules, safety guidance, group allocation and how the habituation experience differs from standard gorilla trekking. Gorilla habituation involves visiting a gorilla family that is still getting used to the presence of humans. You enter the forest with rangers, trackers and researchers, then spend up to four hours observing the gorillas once they are located. During this time, you may see feeding, resting, movement through the forest, family interaction and responses to ranger presence. The experience is slower, more detailed and more research-focused than a normal trek. The full activity can take much of the day depending on the location of the gorilla family and forest conditions. Trails may be muddy, steep and covered with thick vegetation, so good hiking boots, long trousers, gloves and a rain jacket are recommended. After the experience, return to the lodge for rest, dinner and overnight stay.

8 Day Uganda Gorilla, Chimp and Wildlife Safari

Day 3, Return from Bwindi to Kigali

After breakfast, check out and begin the return journey to Kigali. The drive back usually takes about 4 to 5 hours, but border clearance and road conditions can affect arrival time. Your driver guide will assist with the border process and continue to Kigali city or Kigali International Airport. If you are flying out on this day, choose a late afternoon, evening or night flight to allow enough time for the return drive and border formalities.
