Welcome to the activities page of elephant whispers Safaris
You are looking for the best things to do in East Africa. This region includes Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Each country has special outings that you cannot find anywhere else. You will see large animals on the grass plains. You will walk through thick woods to find apes. You might even hang from a rope next to a tall waterfall. This page explains what these trips are really like

Mountain gorillas live in two main places. These are the Virunga Massif and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. You can visit them in Uganda or Rwanda. In Uganda, you go to Bwindi or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. In Rwanda, you visit Volcanoes National Park. This is not a simple walk. You must be ready for a hard climb. The day starts early at the park office. You meet with local experts who know the forest well. They explain how to act near the gorillas. You must stay ten
meters away. You must wear a mask to keep the animals safe from human germs. The hike can last two hours, or it can last seven hours. It depends on where the gorilla family slept the night before. You will walk through vines and thick ferns. The ground is often wet and slippery. You might use a walking stick to stay steady
When you find the gorillas, everything goes quiet. You watch them for one hour. You will see the large silverback. He is the leader of the group. He can weigh 400 pounds. You will see mothers holding their babies. You will see young gorillas playing in the trees. It is a calm time. You do not talk loudly. You just watch them eat bamboo and leaves. Many people find this is the most moving part of their trip. If you want more time, you can try the habituation trip in the Rushaga area of Bwindi. This lets you stay for four hours with the researchers. It is harder because the gorillas are not yet fully used to people. You will have to keep up with them as they move through the bush
Many travelers want to see the five most famous animals. These are the Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, and Rhino. In the past, people called them the “Big Five” because they were the hardest to hunt on foot. Today, we only watch them and take photos
Lions live in large groups called prides. You can see them in the Serengeti in Tanzania or the Masai Mara in Kenya. These parks have wide grass plains. In Uganda, you should visit the Ishasha area of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The lions there are famous for climbing fig trees. They sleep on the branches to stay cool and avoid bugs on the ground. You will see them resting in the heat of the day. Leopards are harder to find. They like to hide in trees or thick bushes. They are solitary animals. You might see one in the Seronera Valley of the Serengeti. Look for a tail hanging down from a large yellow-barked acacia tree. They often pull their food up into the branches to keep it away from hyenas.

Elephants are easy to spot. They move in families led by an elderly female. You will see hundreds of them in Amboseli National Park in Kenya. They walk in front of Mount Kilimanjaro. In Tanzania, Tarangire National Park has many elephants near the river. They use their trunks to dig for water in the dry sand. African buffaloes are everywhere on the savannah. They look like cows, but they are very strong and can be dangerous. They stay in big herds for safety. You will see them in Murchison Falls National Park in Uganda. They often stand near the water to stay cool.
The rhino is the hardest to find of the five. In Uganda, you must go to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to see them on foot. In Tanzania, the Ngorongoro Crater is the best place to see the black rhino. The crater is a large hole made by an old volcano. The walls of the crater keep the animals inside. It is like a natural zoo. You can see all five large animals in one day in the crater.
Chimpanzees are our closest relatives. They are very loud and active. The best place to find them is Kibale National Park in Uganda. This park has the highest number of primates in East Africa. You can also find them in Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda or Gombe Stream in Tanzania. A chimp trek is different from a gorilla trek. Chimps move fast. They swing through the trees and scream to talk to each other. You will hear them before you see them. The sound is very loud and fills the forest. You will walk through the trees to keep up with them. You might see them hunting small monkeys or eating fruit. In Kibale, you can also do a full day of habituation. You start at dawn and watch them wake up in their nests. You follow them all day until they build new nests at night. It is a long day of walking, but you learn a lot about how they live.
If you like height and water, you must visit Sipi Falls in Eastern Uganda. Most people just hike to see the three waterfalls. But the best activity is abseiling. You go to the top of the main waterfall. It is 100 meters high. This is called the Kaptogolo Fall. Local experts put a harness on you. They give you a helmet and gloves. You stand at the edge of the cliff. You lean back and start to move down the rope. The water of the fall is right next to you. You will feel the cold spray on your face. You look out over the plains of Karamoja as you go down. It is a very exciting thing to do. The rock is volcanic and very strong. You do not need to be an expert to do this. The leaders will show you every step. If you prefer the water, you can go to Jinja. This is where the River Nile starts. You can do white water rafting here. The rapids are very big. You will get wet, and your boat might flip over. It is very safe because there are many safety boats nearby.

East Africa is a dream for people who love birds. There are over 1,000 types of birds in Uganda alone. The most famous bird is the Shoebill Stork. It looks like a creature from a long time ago. It has a big beak that looks like a shoe. To find the Shoebill, you must go to the Mabamba Swamp near Entebbe. You get into a small wooden boat. A local person paddles you through the narrow water paths in the papyrus grass. You have to be very quiet. The Shoebill stands still for hours waiting for a fish. When it sees one, it moves very fast. You can also find birds in Murchison Falls. You take a boat on the Nile and see Kingfishers, Bee-eaters, and Fish Eagles. In Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest has birds that you can only find in the Albertine Rift mountains
It is important to know that these activities take time. You cannot rush a safari. Many people try to see too much in one week. They spend all their time in a car. This is a mistake. You should pick a few places and stay for two or three nights.
Another problem is the weather. In the wet season, the roads can be very muddy. Your car might get stuck. The forest trails for gorillas and chimps will be very slippery. You need good boots with a strong grip. You also need a raincoat even in the dry season. It can rain at any time in the rainforest.
Some people find the treks too hard. If you have trouble walking, you should tell your agent. In Bwindi, you can hire a “sedan chair.” Local men will carry you through the forest so you can still see the gorillas. This costs extra money, but it helps people who are not fit or are older.
You might wonder which country is best for you. Uganda is best if you want to see both gorillas and many types of birds. It is also the best place for chimpanzees. It is more affordable than Rwanda for the gorilla trek.
Rwanda is best if you want a luxury trip. The roads are very good, and the parks are close to the city. You can land in Kigali and be at the gorilla park in three hours. It is very clean and organized.
Kenya and Tanzania are best for the wide-open savannah. If you want to see the Great Migration, you must go there. This is when millions of wildebeests and zebras cross the rivers. It happens between July and October. The Masai Mara and the Serengeti are the top spots for this
What is a normal day like? You wake up very early. Most animals are active at dawn. You have a quick coffee and head out in the car. The air is cool, and the sun is just coming up. You might see a lion hunting in the tall grass.
Around noon, it gets very hot. The animals hide in the shade. You go back to your lodge for lunch and a rest. You might sit by the pool or read a book. In the late afternoon, you go out again. This is when the light is best for photos. You watch the sunset with a drink in your hand. This is called a “sundowner.” After dark, you have dinner and sit by a fire. You listen to the sounds of the night. You might hear a hippo grunting in the water or a lion roaring far away.
When you pay for these activities, your money helps save the animals. The Uganda Wildlife Authority uses permit fees to pay rangers. These rangers stop people from hunting the gorillas and elephants. Part of the money also goes to the local people. It builds schools and clinics. Because of this, the number of mountain gorillas is going up. In the 1980s, there were only a few hundred. Now there are over 1,000. Your visit makes a real difference.
