3 Day Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking Safari

A 3-day Kibale chimpanzee trekking safari is one of the best short Uganda primate safaris for travellers who want to see wild chimpanzees without taking a long trip. This safari takes you to Kibale Forest National Park, Uganda’s leading chimpanzee trekking destination, with a high chance of sightings and guided walks led by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. The trip starts from Kampala or Entebbe and follows the scenic western Uganda route to Fort Portal. Along the way, you enjoy views of tea plantations, crater lake landscapes and rural communities. The main experience is chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, where visitors spend up to one hour with a habituated chimpanzee community after the chimps are located. This safari also includes Bigodi Wetland, a rich community conservation area known for birds, monkeys and local village life. On the final day, you can visit the Ndali-Kasenda crater lakes and Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru caves before returning to Kampala or Entebbe.

Day 2, Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest and Bigodi Wetland Walk

This is the main highlight of your safari. After an early breakfast, transfer to the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. The briefing covers safety rules, group allocation and what to expect during the trek. You will then enter the forest with guides and trackers to search for a habituated chimpanzee community. The trek usually takes about 2 to 4 hours, depending on where the chimpanzees are located. Once the chimpanzees are found, you are allowed one hour to observe them. During this time, you may see them feeding, calling, grooming and moving through the forest canopy.

Optional upgrade, Chimpanzee Habituation Experience

Travellers who want more time with the chimpanzees can choose the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience. This allows up to four hours with a semi-habituated group and gives deeper insight into their behaviour. This option must be booked in advance due to limited availability. After lunch, continue to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided nature walk. Bigodi Wetland is known for its birdlife, monkeys and community conservation projects. During the walk, you may see red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and a variety of bird species in a natural wetland environment. Return to the lodge in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight stay.

The drive offers good opportunities for photography and a different view of western Uganda beyond the forest. You will also visit Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru Caves, a cultural and geological site linked to local Toro legends. The site features caves, waterfalls and rock formations and provides a cultural dimension to your safari. After the visit, begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. The drive takes about 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Lunch is arranged along the way, and arrival is expected in the late afternoon or early evening.
