6 Day Uganda Primate Safari with Gorillas, Chimps and Golden Monkeys

Drive to Kibale National Park and Explore Bigodi Wetland

Your driver guide will meet you at your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe for an early departure towards Kibale National Park in western Uganda. Allow roughly 5 to 7 hours on the road, depending on your starting point, traffic and stops. The journey passes through rural Uganda and the Fort Portal area, where you can stop for lunch before continuing to the forest.

If you arrive with enough daylight, join a local guide for a walk through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. Look for great blue turacos, other wetland birds and primates such as red colobus and red-tailed monkeys. Sitatunga antelopes also live in the wetland but are much harder to spot. A community visit introduces you to the local projects supported by tourism. Because the journey from Entebbe can be lengthy, the guide will adjust the timing of the walk and community visit to suit your arrival.

Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park

After breakfast, drive to the Kanyanchu visitor centre for registration and a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. Enter the rainforest with a ranger guide and begin tracking chimpanzees by listening for their calls and following signs of their movement through the trees. Tracking time varies with their location, often taking several hours before a group is found.

Once you reach the chimpanzees, you may spend one hour observing them. Some may feed and groom on the forest floor while others call, climb or move high above you in the canopy. The forest can be humid and muddy, so wear comfortable hiking boots, long trousers and carry water and a light rain jacket.

Return to your lodge for lunch or relaxation. If travel delays prevented the Bigodi community visit on Day 1, the afternoon offers a possible opportunity to complete it, subject to trekking time and local arrangements. Dinner and overnight near Kibale.

Travel from Kibale to Kisoro and the Virunga Foothills

Have breakfast, check out and set off south towards Kisoro, passing through western Uganda's changing scenery. This is a substantial transfer, so allow most of the day, commonly around 7 to 9 hours with lunch and short stops, depending on the route and road conditions. The landscape gradually gives way to cultivated hills, lakes and distant views of the Virunga volcanoes.

Arrive in the Kisoro area in the late afternoon and settle into your lodge. If you are staying by Lake Mulehe or Lake Mutanda, the evening offers a peaceful chance to enjoy the highland scenery before the next day's golden monkey trek. Dinner and overnight in the Kisoro area.

Golden Monkey Trekking in Mgahinga and Transfer to Bwindi

After an early breakfast, drive to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and report to the Ntebeko visitor centre for your ranger briefing. Follow forest paths towards the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains in search of golden monkeys. The trek typically takes several hours, depending on where the monkeys are feeding and moving.

Once the monkeys are located, spend up to one hour watching and photographing them as they leap between bamboo stems, forage and interact in groups. The walk may involve uphill sections and slippery ground, so sturdy footwear is useful even when the monkeys are relatively close to the trailhead.

After the trek and lunch, continue through Kisoro and the southern highlands towards your lodge near Bwindi's Rushaga trekking area. Staying close to your assigned gorilla briefing point avoids a long early-morning transfer on Day 5. Dinner and overnight near southern Bwindi.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi and Optional Batwa Visit

Start early with breakfast and a packed lunch, then report to the gorilla trekking briefing point shown on your permit. Your ranger guide will explain the forest rules and introduce the group before you set off through Bwindi's dense vegetation. Trekking may take several hours on steep and sometimes muddy trails, depending on where your assigned gorilla family is found.

The moment you meet the gorillas is the highlight of the safari. You will have one hour to watch them rest, feed, groom and move together at close but regulated viewing distances. After your visit, follow your rangers back through the forest, meet your driver guide and return to the lodge.

If the trek finishes early enough, an optional visit to a nearby Batwa community can be arranged to learn about traditional forest knowledge, music and daily life. Because gorilla trekking can occupy much of the day, this cultural visit is not guaranteed for the afternoon and is not included unless confirmed in your quotation. The standard plan is to spend a second night near Rushaga rather than rush back to Kisoro after a demanding forest trek. Travellers with a confirmed flight from Kisoro can arrange a different final overnight location if needed.

Return to Kampala or Entebbe, or Connect Through Kisoro or Kigali

After an early breakfast, check out and begin the road journey back to Kampala or Entebbe. This is a long travel day, usually requiring roughly 9 to 11 hours or longer from the southern Bwindi area when meal stops, traffic and road conditions are considered. Break the journey for lunch and, when your chosen road route passes the Uganda Equator, make a brief stop for photographs.

Your driver guide will drop you at your Kampala or Entebbe hotel, or at Entebbe International Airport if your onward flight has been planned with adequate time for the transfer and airport check-in.

To avoid the long drive, you may instead arrange a scheduled domestic flight from Kisoro to Entebbe, subject to flight availability and transfer timing. An onward road transfer to Kigali is another option for travellers continuing through Rwanda; allow approximately 4 to 5 hours from southern Bwindi, with extra time possible for border formalities. Domestic flights, cross-border arrangements and any resulting changes to lodging are quoted separately.
