10 Day Rwanda and Tanzania Gorilla and Wildlife Safari

Arrival in Kigali, Rwanda

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, your private safari representative will welcome you to Rwanda and transfer you to your hotel in the capital. The journey into central Kigali generally takes around 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic and your accommodation location.

Check in and enjoy time to relax after your international flight. If you arrive early, you may take a short guided drive around Kigali, explore selected craft markets or enjoy a local restaurant before returning to your hotel.

Your guide will introduce the route and confirm the arrangements for Volcanoes National Park, including the gorilla trekking permit, accommodation and planned departure time. The evening is free to rest before travelling into the Virunga Mountains.

Kigali City Tour and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, begin the day with a guided introduction to Kigali. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where you can learn about the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and Rwanda's continued commitment to remembrance, education and reconciliation. The memorial deserves enough time for a thoughtful visit rather than a rushed stop.

Depending on your interests, you may also explore a local craft market or another cultural attraction before lunch. Afterwards, leave the capital and drive northwest towards Musanze, the main gateway to Volcanoes National Park.

The drive usually takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, passing Rwanda's green hills, villages and cultivated highland slopes. As you approach Musanze, the dramatic volcanic peaks of the Virunga range begin to dominate the landscape.

Continue to your accommodation near Kinigi or Musanze and check in. Your guide will review the gorilla trekking rules and confirm what to carry for the following morning, including waterproof hiking boots, a rain jacket, drinking water and a packed lunch.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Today is the main highlight of your Rwanda safari. Wake early for breakfast before travelling to Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for the morning gorilla trekking briefing.

Rangers will explain the trekking procedures, group allocations and safety rules before you are assigned to a habituated gorilla family. You will then transfer to the appropriate trekking starting point and enter the forest with your ranger guides.

The trek may lead through bamboo forest, mountain vegetation and muddy or steep trails. The time required to locate the gorillas varies according to their movements, the weather and the terrain, so allow most of the day rather than expecting a fixed return time.

Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one hour quietly observing the family at the required viewing distance. You may see a silverback resting near the group, mothers keeping young gorillas close and juveniles playing, feeding or climbing through the forest.

After the viewing hour, follow your rangers back to the trailhead and meet your driver guide for the return to the lodge. A local porter can be hired to carry your daypack and provide support along difficult sections of the trek.

Spend the remainder of the afternoon relaxing after this memorable experience. Gorilla trekking is restricted to visitors aged 15 years and above, and permits should be arranged in advance.

Optional Golden Monkey Trekking and Return to Kigali

After breakfast, enjoy a final morning around Volcanoes National Park. Travellers who have booked golden monkey trekking can return to the park headquarters for a ranger-guided walk into the bamboo forests along the lower slopes of the Virunga Mountains.

Golden monkeys are lively, fast-moving primates with striking golden-orange fur. Once a habituated group is located, visitors normally spend up to one hour watching them feed on bamboo shoots, leap through the vegetation and interact with one another. The activity is often less demanding than gorilla trekking but still involves forest walking.

If you prefer not to trek again, enjoy a relaxed morning at your lodge or arrange a community cultural visit near Musanze. A visit to Gorilla Guardians Village can introduce you to Rwandan music, dance, crafts and local traditions, depending on available time.

After lunch, begin the drive back to Kigali, normally taking approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Check in at your hotel and spend the evening relaxing before the regional flight to Tanzania the following day.

The golden monkey or cultural activity should be selected in advance, and any relevant permit or entry fees must be confirmed separately.

Fly from Kigali to Tanzania and Transfer to Arusha

After breakfast, check out and transfer to Kigali International Airport for your flight into Tanzania. Your final flight arrangement may involve a direct service where available or a connection through another regional airport, depending on airline schedules and travel dates.

The planned Tanzania arrival point is Kilimanjaro International Airport, which serves the Arusha region and northern Tanzania safari circuit. The exact routing, departure time, arrival time and baggage allowance should be confirmed before finalising the accommodation or the following day's safari.

On arrival, complete Tanzania immigration procedures and meet your local safari driver guide. Transfer to your hotel in Arusha, normally a journey of around 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on traffic and the hotel's location.

Spend the remainder of the afternoon relaxing after the flight. If you arrive early enough, a short visit to a local craft centre or coffee-related attraction may be arranged. Otherwise, enjoy the hotel facilities and prepare for your first Tanzania game drive.

Tarangire National Park Game Drive and Overnight near the Park

After breakfast, leave Arusha and travel southwest towards Tarangire National Park. The journey generally takes around 2 to 3 hours, depending on traffic, road conditions and your starting hotel.

Tarangire is known for its ancient baobab trees, large elephant families and beautiful landscapes of woodland, grassland and seasonal swamps. The Tarangire River is a particularly important water source during the drier months, drawing many animals into the park.

Begin your game drive after entering the park, searching for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, impalas, waterbucks and warthogs. Lions are also found here, while leopards and cheetahs are more difficult to encounter.

Stop for lunch at an appropriate location before continuing the afternoon game drive. Your guide may explore different habitats to look for wildlife around open plains, woodland edges and areas close to water.

Tarangire is also rewarding for birdwatchers, with hornbills, rollers, eagles, storks and numerous other savannah birds found throughout its varied habitats.

After the game drive, continue to your accommodation near the park for dinner and overnight.

Drive from Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

After an early breakfast, check out and begin the journey towards Serengeti National Park. This is a substantial transfer through northern Tanzania's safari circuit, passing the Karatu highlands and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area before reaching the Serengeti plains.

Allow approximately 6 to 8 hours or longer for the journey depending on the route, park formalities, road conditions and wildlife stops. The drive is scenic, moving from green highland countryside towards open grasslands and volcanic landscapes.

As you travel through the Ngorongoro highlands, enjoy views over the surrounding countryside and make suitable stops for photographs. Continue towards Serengeti National Park, where the landscape becomes increasingly open and wildlife viewing begins.

Depending on your arrival time, enjoy an introductory game drive in the Central Serengeti area. Look for zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes and predators.

Central Serengeti is especially known for its resident big cats, including lions, leopards and cheetahs. Its grasslands, river valleys and rocky outcrops provide rewarding wildlife viewing even when the main migration herds are elsewhere.

Full-Day Serengeti National Park Wildlife Safari

Wake up early and prepare for a full day exploring Serengeti National Park. Carry a packed lunch so you can spend more time in the field and follow the most productive wildlife-viewing routes without returning to camp during the middle of the day.

The Central Serengeti is one of Tanzania's most rewarding areas for resident wildlife. Search for lions resting around granite kopjes, cheetahs moving through open grasslands and leopards in suitable riverine woodland. You may also encounter elephants, giraffes, Cape buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, spotted hyenas and other animals.

Your guide will explore the Seronera region and surrounding plains, choosing routes according to recent sightings and the wildlife you are most interested in observing. Spend time watching animal behaviour and taking photographs rather than rushing from one sighting to another.

The Serengeti is also the setting for the annual Great Wildebeest Migration. The animals move through different areas of the ecosystem as seasonal rains influence grazing and water availability. During the southern calving season, the largest concentrations may be around Ndutu, while the northern Mara River areas become important during the midyear migration period.

Because this suggested itinerary concentrates on Central Serengeti, it should be presented as a classic wildlife safari rather than a guaranteed Mara River crossing tour. A more migration-focused route can be arranged by changing the camp location and adjusting the number of nights.

Enjoy lunch during the game drive and continue wildlife viewing through the afternoon before returning to your camp for dinner and overnight.

Morning Serengeti Game Drive and Transfer to the Ngorongoro Highlands

After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive in Serengeti National Park before beginning the journey southeast towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Your guide will search for wildlife along the route, giving you another chance to see lions, giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffaloes and other species that may be encountered on the plains.

As you leave the Serengeti, the landscape gradually changes from open grassland to rolling highlands, cultivated countryside and forested slopes. Depending on available time, you may stop at an authorised viewpoint overlooking Ngorongoro Crater.

The crater is one of East Africa's most extraordinary natural landmarks. It is a vast volcanic caldera with a floor approximately 600 metres below the rim and a wildlife-rich landscape of grasslands, woodland, marshes and shallow lakes.

Continue towards your overnight accommodation in the Ngorongoro or Karatu area, allowing approximately 4 to 6 hours or longer for the transfer from Central Serengeti, depending on the route and stops.

Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive and Transfer to Arusha for Departure

Wake up very early and enjoy breakfast before heading towards Ngorongoro Crater for your final safari experience. From the crater rim, descend approximately 600 metres to the floor of the caldera, which covers around 260 square kilometres.

Explore the crater's open grasslands, woodland and wetlands with your safari driver guide. Look for lions, elephants, Cape buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, spotted hyenas and other animals. Ngorongoro is also an important refuge for endangered black rhinos, although sightings are not guaranteed.

Your guide may explore the areas around Lake Magadi, where flamingos and other waterbirds may be seen depending on water conditions, before continuing towards the grasslands and woodland that support a different mix of animals.

Enjoy a packed lunch at a designated picnic location before continuing the game drive, subject to the permitted crater visiting duration and your onward flight arrangements.

Later, ascend the crater wall and begin the road journey towards Arusha. Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours from Karatu to Arusha, with additional time if travelling to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Your safari driver guide will transfer you to your confirmed departure airport or hotel in the Arusha area. A late-evening international flight is preferable because the day includes the crater descent, wildlife viewing and a substantial transfer.
