Ol Donyo Lodge, Chyulu Hills

Ol Donyo Lodge sits at the foothills of Kenya’s Chyulu Hills, between Tsavo and Amboseli, on Maasai-owned land with wide views across the plains towards Mount Kilimanjaro. The lodge dates back to 1987, when bush pilot and conservationist Richard Bonham built it in this remote corner of southern Kenya. It was rebuilt in 2008, using lava rock and other natural materials throughout the design to reflect the volcanic landscape of the Chyulu Hills. With just 9 suites, Ol Donyo has an intimate feel, but there is plenty to do beyond the usual game drive. You can sleep beneath the stars on a rooftop star bed, cool off in a private plunge pool, ride through the hills on horseback, head out on foot or by mountain bike, or take day and night game drives across the surrounding wilderness. A waterhole hide adds another way to settle in and watch wildlife at close range.

Where Is Ol Donyo Lodge Located?

Ol Donyo Lodge lies in the foothills of the Chyulu Hills, between Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks. It sits on Maasai-owned land within the Mbirikani Ranch area, with wide views across the plains towards Mount Kilimanjaro. The setting is a big part of what makes a stay at Ol Donyo Lodge special. Instead of being surrounded by the boundaries of a busy national park, you have the freedom to explore the ranch and Chyulu Hills on game drives, guided walks, horseback rides and mountain bike excursions. This gives you a different kind of safari, with more ways to enjoy the landscape beyond a traditional game drive. Wildlife also comes right up to the lodge. A waterhole below the property attracts animals throughout the day, so you can sometimes sit back at camp and watch wildlife without having to head out in a vehicle first. The lodge itself blends naturally into this volcanic landscape. Lava rock features heavily throughout the property, giving the buildings a strong connection to the Chyulu Hills and the rugged surroundings.

Suites and Star Beds at Ol Donyo Lodge

Ol Donyo Lodge has nine private suites, including the two-bedroom Sambu Suite. The accommodation is divided into Pool Suites, Deluxe Pool Suites and the larger Sambu Suite, with each suite standing independently rather than forming part of a conventional hotel block. This gives each room a strong sense of privacy and allows the surrounding landscape to become part of the stay.

Pool Suites

The Pool Suites are built around generous indoor and outdoor living spaces, with private verandas opening towards the surrounding plains. Most suites also have their own plunge pool, giving you a private place to cool off while taking in the views. The outdoor space is just as important as the room itself. You can spend time on the veranda, relax beside the pool or simply sit outside and take in the landscape around the lodge.

Deluxe Pool Suites

The Deluxe Pool Suites offer another private accommodation option within the lodge’s nine-suite layout. They retain the same emphasis on space, privacy and connection with the surrounding landscape, with substantial private areas and views across the plains. Guests staying in these suites can also make use of one of Ol Donyo’s most memorable features, the rooftop star beds, where you can spend the night outdoors beneath the Kenyan sky.

Two-Bedroom Sambu Suite

The Sambu Suite is Ol Donyo’s private two-bedroom option and is particularly well suited to families or two couples travelling together. The suite looks towards the waterhole, savannah and Mount Kilimanjaro and accommodates up to four adults and one child. Children under five are not permitted in the Sambu Suite. The two-bedroom arrangement gives families and couples travelling together more privacy and separation than a standard suite, without having to stay in separate accommodation. Another special feature is the professional camera body and lens kit available for guests to use during their stay, making it easier to capture wildlife and landscapes around the lodge.

Suite Amenities and Rooftop Star Beds

The suites are designed to give you plenty of comfort while keeping you connected to the outdoors. Facilities include private verandas, lounge areas, en-suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, deep stone soaking tubs, hot and cold running water, bathrobes and slippers, complimentary Wi-Fi, ceiling fans, mosquito nets, in-room safes, yoga mats and field binoculars. The rooftop star beds are one of the features that make a stay at Ol Donyo particularly memorable. Instead of simply looking at the night sky from a terrace, you can take your bed onto the rooftop and sleep beneath the stars. It turns the rooftop into an extension of your accommodation and gives you a completely different way to spend the night in the Kenyan bush. Most suites also have private plunge pools, while a separate communal swimming pool sits near the main lodge.

Children and Family Stays

Ol Donyo welcomes children from five years of age, with activities available to keep younger safari travellers engaged. These include birding, cooking, art and wildlife tracking. For families, the Sambu Suite is a practical choice because its two-bedroom layout provides more space and privacy. Children under five, however, cannot stay in this particular suite.

Restaurants and Dining at Ol Donyo Lodge

Dining at Ol Donyo fits naturally into the relaxed atmosphere of the lodge. Meals are included in the standard stay and can be enjoyed indoors or outside on the open terraces overlooking the waterhole and surrounding plains. The main dining and living area feels more like a comfortable home in the bush than a formal hotel restaurant. Fresh ingredients are used throughout the meals, while the open terraces give you the chance to dine with the landscape around you. The terraces are particularly enjoyable during the quieter parts of the day, when you can sit with a drink or a meal and still watch for animals coming to the waterhole below.

Bar, Campfire and Common Areas

The main communal areas are open-sided, with local stone and thatched roofs creating a warm safari setting. In the evening, the campfire in front of the lodge becomes a natural meeting point where guests can relax after the day’s activities. The swimming pool is close to the main lodge, while the open setting means you can enjoy pre-dinner drinks without feeling separated from the bush. With the waterhole and surrounding plains nearby, there is always the possibility of watching wildlife activity as the evening settles in.

Spa, Gym and Other Lodge Facilities

Massage and Fitness

Ol Donyo Lodge has a well-equipped gym where guests can keep up with their fitness routine between safari activities. If you prefer to slow down and relax, on-site massage treatments offer a comfortable way to unwind after a day of walking, horseback riding or game drives.

Children’s Activities

Children have plenty to keep them engaged at Ol Donyo. The programme includes activities such as birding, cooking, art and wildlife tracking, giving younger guests a chance to learn about the surrounding landscape while having fun.

Boutique and Local Crafts

A small boutique at the lodge offers locally and regionally made crafts, with many of the items supporting projects in nearby Maasai communities. It is a good place to pick up a locally made piece while contributing to communities around the conservancy.

Main Swimming Pool

Safari Activities at Ol Donyo Lodge

Ol Donyo Lodge offers a wide choice of ways to experience the Chyulu Hills, from traditional game drives to walking, horseback riding and time spent watching wildlife from specially designed hides. The variety makes it easy to slow things down between drives and see the landscape from different perspectives.

Day and Night Game Drives

Day and night game drives take you across Mbirikani Ranch and into the wider Chyulu Hills ecosystem. Day drives focus on the open plains, hills and surrounding wildlife, while night drives reveal a completely different side of the landscape as nocturnal animals become active after dark.

Waterhole Hides and Wildlife Viewing

The waterhole hides offer one of the most distinctive ways to watch wildlife at Ol Donyo. There are two hides, including a sunken hide that places you close to water level as animals come to drink. The sunken hide even has its own coffee machine, so you can settle in and spend time watching wildlife without having to leave for a game drive. It is a quiet way to observe animals at close range and one of the experiences that sets Ol Donyo apart.

Guided Walking Safaris

Walking safaris take you into the volcanic hills and surrounding savannah on foot. Away from the vehicle, you can slow down and pay closer attention to animal tracks, plants, birds and the smaller details that are easy to miss during a game drive.

Horseback Safaris

Horseback riding is one of the signature experiences at Ol Donyo Lodge. Experienced riders can cross the open plains on horseback, covering the landscape quietly and naturally while getting a different perspective from a conventional safari vehicle. Horseback riding is included in the standard lodge rate, making it possible to build a riding experience into your stay without treating it as a separate paid activity.

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking offers another active way to explore the Chyulu Hills. It works particularly well for guests staying several nights, giving you the chance to break up game drives with time on the trails and see more of the surrounding terrain at your own pace.

Maasai Village Visits

A visit to a nearby Maasai community gives guests a closer connection to the people and landscape around Ol Donyo. The lodge sits on land owned and inhabited by the local Maasai community, so the visit forms a natural part of understanding the area rather than feeling like a separate cultural stop added to the safari. Depending on the arrangement, guests can spend time with the community and learn more about their way of life, traditions and connection to the land.

Amboseli National Park Excursions

Guests staying at Ol Donyo can also take a day excursion to Amboseli National Park, adding another wildlife area to their safari without having to change accommodation. The drive between Ol Donyo and Amboseli takes about two hours, making it practical to combine the quieter Chyulu Hills setting with a full day of wildlife viewing in Amboseli.
