5 Day Lake Mburo and Lake Bunyonyi Romantic Safari

A 5 day Lake Mburo and Lake Bunyonyi romantic safari is designed for couples who want a relaxed Uganda trip with wildlife, lake views, private activities and comfortable lodges. The route combines Lake Mburo National Park, known for zebras, impalas, boat cruises and horseback safaris, with Lake Bunyonyi, one of Uganda’s most scenic lakes for canoeing, swimming and quiet lodge stays. This itinerary starts from Kampala or Entebbe and moves at a slower pace than a standard wildlife safari. Instead of rushing between many parks, it gives you time for a Lake Mburo sunset boat cruise, a horseback or walking safari, private canoeing on Lake Bunyonyi, island visits, village walks and relaxed evenings by the water. The trip works well for honeymooners, anniversary travellers and couples who want privacy without removing all wildlife from the experience. It can also be extended with gorilla trekking in Bwindi, which is about 2 hours from Lake Bunyonyi depending on the route and sector.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1, Transfer to Lake Mburo and Sunset Boat Cruise

Your driver guide will pick you up from your hotel, residence or Entebbe International Airport at around 7:00 am and begin the transfer to Lake Mburo National Park. The drive takes about 4 hours, depending on traffic and stops. You will travel in a private 4×4 safari vehicle with enough space for comfort and photography along the route. Stop at the Uganda Equator in Kayabwe for photos and a short break, then continue towards Mbarara for lunch at Igongo Cultural Centre or another suitable restaurant. In the afternoon, enter Lake Mburo National Park. The park is known for zebras, impalas, elands, buffaloes, warthogs and birdlife, making it a good first wildlife stop for a relaxed romantic safari. Later, take a sunset boat cruise on Lake Mburo. During the cruise, you may see hippos, crocodiles, African fish eagles and other water birds along the lake shores. A private boat or drink arrangement can be included on request. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay. Accommodation options: Luxury option Mihingo Lodge, Mid-range option: Rwakobo Rock

Day 2, Lake Mburo Horseback Safari and Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

After breakfast, enjoy a horseback safari in Lake Mburo National Park, usually arranged through Mihingo Lodge, or choose a ranger-guided walking safari if you prefer not to ride. Lake Mburo is one of the best places in Uganda for horseback and walking safaris because the main visitor areas do not have resident lions or elephants. This allows guests to experience wildlife from outside the vehicle under professional guidance. During the activity, you may see zebras, impalas, elands, giraffes, warthogs and birds at a slower pace than a normal game drive. Horseback safaris are especially good for couples who want a quiet and memorable wildlife experience. After the activity, begin the transfer to Lake Bunyonyi. The drive takes about 4 to 5 hours, passing through Mbarara, Kabale and the Kigezi highlands. As you approach Lake Bunyonyi, the landscape changes to terraced hills, small villages and lake views. Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon, check in and relax by the water. Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Bunyonyi. Accommodation options: Luxury option BirdNest Resort, Mid-range option Arcadia Cottages

Day 3, Lake Bunyonyi Canoe Ride and Island Visits

After breakfast overlooking Lake Bunyonyi, spend the morning on a guided canoe ride across the lake. A traditional canoe gives a quiet and intimate way to explore the lake, especially for couples who prefer a slower pace. Your guide will paddle through calm waters, explain the history of the islands and point out birds along the shoreline. You may visit Akampene Island, also known as Punishment Island. The history connected to the island is sensitive, and your guide will explain it respectfully as part of the cultural background of the area. You may also visit Kyahugye Island, depending on timing and final arrangements. The island offers nature views and a chance to see wildlife introduced to the island. Lunch can be arranged at the lodge, on an island, or as a picnic depending on your package. The afternoon is left for swimming, reading, relaxing by the dock or enjoying the lodge facilities. Lake Bunyonyi is known as one of Uganda’s safer lakes for swimming because it has no hippos or crocodiles, but the water is deep, so confident swimming is advised. Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Bunyonyi.

Day 4, Lake Bunyonyi Viewpoints and Village Walk

After breakfast, drive to one of the high viewpoints above Lake Bunyonyi for wide views of the lake, islands and surrounding hills. This is one of the best photo points of the trip and works well for couples who want quiet scenic moments. Later, take a slow village walk with a local guide. The walk introduces daily life around Lake Bunyonyi, including farming, local homes, small markets and traditional skills such as sorghum beer preparation or blacksmith work, depending on what is available on the day. Return to the lodge for lunch and a relaxed afternoon. A massage, private dinner setup or sunset drink can be arranged on request. In the evening, enjoy your final night by the lake, where the cool air and dark skies create a calm setting for couples. Dinner and overnight stay at Lake Bunyonyi.

Day 5, Return to Kampala or Entebbe with Mpambire Stop

After breakfast, begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe at around 7:00 am. The drive from Lake Bunyonyi usually takes about 7 to 8 hours, depending on traffic, stops and road conditions. Lunch is arranged in Mbarara, Masaka or another suitable stop along the route. Near Mpigi, you may stop at Mpambire Drum Makers to see traditional drum making and buy souvenirs if interested. Continue to Kampala or Entebbe for drop-off at your hotel, residence or Entebbe International Airport. For same-day international flights, choose a departure after 8:00 pm to allow enough time for the long road transfer. This marks the end of your 5-day Lake Mburo and Lake Bunyonyi romantic safari.
