Game drives run in open-roof safari vehicles with guides who know the tracks and animal behaviour. Ngorongoro Crater is strongest for concentrated viewing and rhinos, Serengeti for open plains and predator action, and Tarangire for elephants — while Ruaha and Nyerere suit travellers who want quieter wilderness.

Balloon safaris drift above the savannah for about an hour, usually starting at sunrise or a few hours before sunset when the air is calmer. They're commonly run in Serengeti, Tarangire and around Ngorongoro — a favourite for photographers and honeymooners.

The cost varies depending on travel style, trip length and accommodation level. Budget safaris are more affordable but use simpler lodges, midrange options offer better comfort and location, and luxury safaris include premium camps and fly-in options. The biggest cost factors are park fees, accommodation choice and travel logistics.

Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but the timing of the Great Migration, calving season and river crossings makes some months better than others.
Easier game viewing with thinner bush; August–September often gives the best Mara River crossing chances.
Fresh grass, clearer air and fewer tourists as the herds begin returning south.
Up to 500,000 calves born on the southern plains in about six weeks — excellent predator action.
Green scenery and lower rates (often 20–40% off), though some tracks get muddy.
Most northern-circuit safaris start from Arusha, the main gateway to Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Arusha National Park and Kilimanjaro. Southern-circuit trips often use Mikumi as a gateway into Ruaha and Nyerere.
