3 Day Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon Hiking Tour
A 3-day Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon hiking tour is a short eastern Uganda trip for travellers who want waterfalls, mountain scenery, local coffee and guided forest walks without taking on a full summit climb. The trip starts from Kampala or Entebbe and takes you to the Sipi Falls area on the slopes of Mount Elgon. This tour is suitable for travellers looking for a moderate hiking experience with cultural value and strong scenery. The trails include steep sections, muddy paths and uneven ground, but no technical climbing is required.

Detailed itinerary
Day 1, Travel from Kampala or Entebbe to Sipi Falls
Your driver guide will pick you up from your hotel, residence or airport location in Kampala or Entebbe at around 7:00 am. The drive heads east along the Jinja highway, crossing the New Nile Bridge before continuing through Iganga and Mbale. After Mbale, the road begins to climb towards Kapchorwa and the Sipi Falls area on the slopes of Mount Elgon. The landscape changes from lowland towns and flat plains to cooler mountain roads, banana plantations, cliffs and far-reaching views. Arrival at the lodge is usually around early afternoon, depending on traffic and stops. After lunch, you can rest at the lodge or take a short village and viewpoint walk. On a clear day, the viewpoints around Sipi offer wide views towards the plains below Mount Elgon. Dinner and overnight stay near Sipi Falls. Accommodation options: Luxury option: Sipi River Lodge, Mid-range option: Rafiki Lodge Sipi, Budget option: Lacam Lodge

Day 2, Sipi Falls Hike and Sabiny Coffee Experience
After breakfast, meet your local hiking guide for the Sipi Falls hike. Good grip hiking shoes and a light rain jacket are recommended because the trail can be muddy and slippery after rain. The Sipi River drops over three main waterfalls, and the hike usually takes about 3 to 4 hours depending on your pace, weather and the route used.
The Three Sipi Waterfalls: The upper waterfall drops about 85 metres and gives strong views of the surrounding cliffs and farmland. The middle waterfall, often called Simba, is smaller and has a cave behind it. You can walk behind the water curtain when conditions are safe, which makes this one of the most memorable photo points on the hike. The main lower waterfall drops about 100 metres and is the most recognised view of Sipi Falls. The mist from the water keeps the nearby vegetation green and cool throughout much of the year. The trails pass through local farms where onions, cabbage, beans and coffee are grown on the slopes. Some sections are steep, and wooden ladders may be used along parts of the route.

After lunch, join a Sabiny coffee experience with a local farmer. Mount Elgon is known for Arabica coffee, and this activity shows the process from red coffee cherries to the final cup. You may take part in picking, pulping, roasting, grinding and tasting the coffee. This experience supports local farming families and adds cultural depth to the hiking day.
Optional Abseiling at Sipi Falls: Adventurous travellers can add abseiling at the main Sipi waterfall at an extra cost. Trained guides handle the ropes and safety equipment. This activity should be requested in advance so equipment and guides can be prepared. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay. Evenings in Sipi can be cool, so carry a warm layer.
Day 3, Kapkwai Forest Walk and Return to Kampala or Entebbe
After breakfast, check out and drive to Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre, part of Mount Elgon National Park. Here, you join a Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guide for a Mount Elgon forest walk. This walk is different from the Sipi Falls hike because it takes place inside the protected national park, with quieter trails, forest vegetation and a stronger nature focus. The trail is usually gentler than the Sipi Falls route, although it can still be muddy in some sections. You may see black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, forest birds, Elgon teak, fig trees and medicinal plants, explained by the ranger. After the forest walk, begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. Lunch can be arranged in Mbale or Jinja. Arrival is usually in the evening, depending on traffic. For same-day international flights, choose a late evening or night departure to allow enough time for the long return drive.
