5 Day Mount Elgon Hike to Wagagai Peak

A 5 day Mount Elgon hike to Wagagai Peak is a guided summit trek for travellers who want a serious mountain experience in eastern Uganda without technical climbing. Wagagai Peak is the highest point of Mount Elgon at 4,321 metres, reached through moorland, forest, bamboo, giant heather and the mountain’s wide volcanic caldera. This itinerary ascends through the Piswa Trail and descends through the Sasa Trail. The Piswa Trail gives a more gradual climb, helping the body adjust to altitude while offering broad views across the Karamoja plains. The Sasa Trail is steeper and more direct, making it a practical descent route after the summit. The trip starts with a visit to Sipi Falls before the main trek begins. On the mountain, you are supported by a mountain guide, Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, porters and a camp chef. This hike is suitable for fit travellers who can walk for several hours on steep, muddy and high-altitude terrain.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1, Travel from Kampala or Entebbe to Sipi Falls

Your guide will pick you up from Kampala or Entebbe at around 6:30 am and begin the drive east towards Mount Elgon. The route follows Jinja Road, passing Mabira Forest and crossing the New Nile Bridge before continuing through Iganga and Mbale. Lunch is usually arranged in Mbale, a busy town at the foot of Mount Elgon. After lunch, continue towards Kapchorwa and the Sipi Falls area. The road climbs into cooler highland conditions, with views of farms, cliffs and the plains below. In the afternoon, take a guided walk to view the three Sipi waterfalls. The upper waterfall drops about 85 metres, the middle waterfall allows access behind the water curtain when conditions are safe, and the main waterfall drops about 100 metres over a steep cliff. Return to the lodge for dinner and a trek briefing. Your guide will check your hiking gear, warm layers, rain protection and sleeping equipment before the mountain section begins. Drive time: 6 to 7 hours. Accommodation: Luxury, Sipi River Lodge, Mid-range, Noah’s Ark Hotel. Meal plan Lunch and dinner

Day 2, Kapkwata Registration and Hike to Piswa Camp

After breakfast, drive to Kapkwata Exploration Centre at about 2,190 metres. The drive takes around 45 minutes on a dirt road, depending on weather and road conditions. At the ranger station, you complete permit formalities and meet your support team. This usually includes Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, your lead mountain guide, porters and camp crew. Porters carry the main camping equipment, food and larger bags, while you carry a daypack with water, rain gear, snacks and personal items. The hike begins on the Piswa Trail, known for its more gradual climb compared with the Sasa route. You start through montane forest with trees such as Podocarpus and may see black-and-white colobus monkeys or forest birds in the canopy. As the trail gains height, the vegetation changes into bamboo and then the heath zone, where giant heather covered in lichen becomes common. The path can be muddy, especially after rain. Arrive at Piswa Camp at around 2,850 metres in the late afternoon. The crew sets up camp, prepares tea and serves dinner. On clear evenings, the camp gives views towards the Karamoja plains. Hiking time: 7 to 8 hours. Elevation gain: about 660 metres. Overnight: Camping at Piswa Camp. Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3, Hike from Piswa Camp to Hunters Cave Camp

After breakfast, continue higher into the moorland zone of Mount Elgon. This is one of the most scenic hiking days, with open views, tussock grass, giant lobelias and giant groundsels. These plants are typical of East African high-altitude environments and give the upper mountain a unique appearance. As you approach the caldera rim, the views become wider. On clear days, you may see distant peaks and the plains of eastern Uganda. Depending on conditions and timing, the route may include a detour towards the hot springs near the Suam River area. The day ends at Hunters Cave Camp, located around 3,850 metres. At this altitude, some hikers may feel light breathlessness or mild headaches. A steady pace, warm layers and enough water are important. Dinner is served at camp as you prepare for the summit day. Hiking time: 4 to 5 hours. Elevation gain: About 1,000 metres. Overnight: Camping at Hunters Cave Camp. Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4, Summit Wagagai Peak and Descend to Mude Cave Camp

biking-elgon-Hiking

Begin before sunrise for the summit attempt to Wagagai Peak. The trail follows the caldera rim through cold high-altitude terrain. This section is rocky in places but non-technical, so ropes are not required. The challenge comes from altitude, weather, long walking hours and the exposed mountain conditions. Reach Wagagai Peak at 4,321 metres around mid-morning, depending on pace and weather. At the summit, take time for photos and views across the mountain, caldera and, on clear days, towards Kenya. After the summit, descend towards Mude Cave Camp at about 3,500 metres. This descent links the route to the Sasa Trail and can be demanding on the knees because of the drop in altitude. Arrive at camp in the afternoon for rest, dinner and your final night on the mountain. Hiking time
8 to 9 hours. Elevation gain: About 471 metres to the summit. Elevation loss: About 821 metres to camp. Overnight: Camping at Mude Cave Camp. Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5, Descend via Sasa Trail to Budadiri and Return

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the Sasa Trail towards Budadiri. This is the most direct route down Mount Elgon and includes a steep section commonly known as the Wall of Death. The name sounds dramatic, but the section is managed with ladders and ramps that help hikers descend more safely. The trail continues through forest as the air becomes warmer and thicker. You may see birds, forest vegetation and local landscapes as you approach the lower slopes. Arrive at Budadiri Ranger Station around late morning or midday, depending on pace. After signing out and thanking the mountain team, meet your safari driver and continue to Mbale for lunch. From Mbale, you can return to Kampala or Entebbe, or continue to Jinja if your itinerary includes the Nile. Arrival in Kampala or Entebbe is usually in the evening. For same-day international flights, choose a late-night departure or add an extra night.
