8 Day Uganda Albertine Rift Birding and Primate Safari

An 8-day Uganda Albertine Rift birding and primate safari is designed for travellers who want serious birding, rare forest species and Uganda’s strongest primate encounters in one route. This safari combines Mabamba Wetland for the shoebill, Kibale Forest for chimpanzee trekking, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for high-altitude birding. The route follows the western arm of the Great Rift Valley, one of Africa’s richest biodiversity zones. The changing altitude creates wetlands, lowland forest, montane forest, bamboo zones and volcanic slopes, each supporting different bird and primate species. This itinerary is suitable for international birders, wildlife photographers and travellers who want more than a standard Uganda safari. It focuses on Albertine Rift endemics, forest birding, primate tracking and scenic movement through Uganda’s western highlands.

Detailed Safari Itinerary

Day 1, Mabamba Shoebill Search and Transfer to Kibale Forest

Your guide will pick you up early from Entebbe or Kampala and transfer you to Mabamba Wetland on the edge of Lake Victoria. Mabamba is a large papyrus wetland and one of Uganda’s most reliable sites for shoebill viewing. You board a canoe with a local site guide and move through narrow wetland channels in search of the shoebill and other birds. The shoebill is the main target, but you may also see African jacana, malachite kingfisher, pied kingfisher, swamp flycatcher, herons and other wetland species. After the canoe birding experience, begin the long transfer to Kibale Forest National Park. The drive takes about 6 to 7 hours, passing through rural towns, tea plantations and western Uganda landscapes. Arrive near Kibale Forest in the late afternoon or evening for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2, Kibale Chimpanzee Trekking and Bigodi Wetland Birding

After breakfast, transfer to Kanyanchu Visitor Centre for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park. After briefing, you enter the rainforest with Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and trackers to search for a habituated chimpanzee community. The trek can take 2 to 4 hours depending on where the chimpanzees are feeding or moving. Once located, you spend one hour observing them as they feed, groom, call, rest and move through the forest canopy. In the afternoon, visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided birding and community walk. Bigodi is a strong site for Great Blue Turaco, wetland birds, monkeys and local conservation work. You may also see red colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys and other forest-edge species. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3, Green-breasted Pitta Search and Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

Start before dawn for a focused birding session in Kibale Forest. The main target is the Green-breasted Pitta, one of the most sought-after forest birds in Uganda. This bird can be difficult to find because it stays low in dark forest undergrowth and is most active during early morning display periods. Your birding guide will focus on suitable forest sections and listen carefully for calls and movement. After the birding session, return for breakfast, then drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The journey takes about 3 hours, passing crater lakes, tea plantations and Rift Valley scenery. In the afternoon, go for a Kazinga Channel boat cruise, which connects Lake George and Lake Edward. The channel is excellent for water birds and wildlife, with possible sightings of African skimmers, yellow-billed storks, great white pelicans, hippos, crocodiles, elephants and buffaloes. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4, Ishasha Tree Climbing Lions and Transfer to Bwindi

After breakfast, drive south through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Ishasha is known for tree-climbing lions, often seen resting in fig trees during the heat of the day. Sightings are not guaranteed, but the sector offers a quieter savannah experience and good chances for topi, buffaloes, elephants and grassland birds. While in Ishasha, your guide may also look for species such as black-lored babbler, white-browed robin-chat and other savannah birds. Continue towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The landscape changes from open savannah to steep highlands, terraced farms and dense forest edges. Arrive in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi, one of the best areas for montane forest birding and access to key Albertine Rift species.

Day 5, Bwindi Gorilla Trekking and Montane Forest Birding

After an early breakfast, report to the park headquarters for gorilla trekking briefing. You will be assigned a gorilla family and guided into the forest by rangers and trackers. The trek can take between 2 to 8 hours depending on terrain, weather and where the gorillas are located. Once the gorillas are found, you spend one hour observing them. You may see a silverback, mothers with infants, juveniles playing and family members feeding or resting. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and rest. If time and energy allow, you may do light birding around Ruhija, especially around the Mabwindi Swamp Trail, which is a strong area for montane forest species. Later, transfer towards Kisoro or the Mgahinga National Park, depending on lodge arrangements.

Day 6, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Birding

Spend the day birding in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, a highland park on Uganda’s border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The main birding route is often the Gorge Trail around Mount Sabinyo, passing through bamboo, montane forest and volcanic slopes. This is one of the best places in Uganda to look for Rwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, Archer’s robin-chat and other Albertine Rift species. The air is cooler at this altitude, and the trails can be muddy, so waterproof hiking boots, long trousers and a rain jacket are recommended. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7, Golden Monkey Tracking in Mgahinga

After breakfast, transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for golden monkey tracking. The activity begins with a briefing before entering the bamboo forest with ranger guides. Golden monkeys are active, colourful and usually move in groups, giving travellers a lively primate experience different from gorilla trekking. The walk can take 2 to 4 hours depending on their location. After the encounter, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. This day adds a strong Albertine Rift primate highlight before the return journey.

Day 8, Return to Entebbe with Equator Stop or Flight Option

After breakfast, begin the return journey to Entebbe. The road transfer takes about 9 to 10 hours, depending on road conditions, stops and traffic. You may stop at the Uganda Equator for photos, lunch and souvenir shopping. Travellers who prefer to reduce road time can request a domestic flight from Kisoro Airstrip to Entebbe, depending on flight schedules and availability. If flying internationally on the same day, choose a late evening or night departure, especially when returning by road.
