Lake Mutanda Resort Near Bwindi and Mgahinga
Lake Mutanda Resort sits on a quiet peninsula on Lake Mutanda near Kisoro, with wide views across the water, small islands and the Virunga Mountains. It is one of those places that works well when you want more than just a room for the night. You come here for the setting, the fresh lake air, the mountain views and the easy access to the southern gorilla trekking routes. The resort is a convenient base for travellers trekking gorillas in Rushaga and Nkuringo, with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park about 1.5 hours away. Some longer Uganda safari routes can also connect to Ruhija with the right timing, but the strongest use of this lodge is around Kisoro, Lake Mutanda, Rushaga, Nkuringo and Mgahinga. That makes it a good choice for gorilla trekkers, volcano hikers, birders and guests who want a quieter lakeside stay before or after the forest. This is not a lodge you choose only because it is near Bwindi. You choose it because the location gives you a full southwestern Uganda experience, gorilla trekking, lake time, Virunga views, local culture, hiking and quiet evenings away from the busy internet world.

Accommodation and Facilities at Lake Mutanda Resort
Accommodation here is set up for visitors who want a quiet lakeside stay with easy access to the southern gorilla trekking routes. The resort has 13 cottage rooms spread across the peninsula facing Lake Mutanda, with views over the water, the Kigezi highlands and the Virunga Mountains. The cottages sit on raised wooden platforms, so guests can enjoy the lake scenery from their own sitting area or private deck.
The rooms are arranged in Standard and Luxury cottage categories, with options for single guests, double or twin occupancy, and family or triple rooms. This makes the lodge suitable for couples, solo travellers, families and small safari groups. Extra persons can be added to a room for up to USD 95, while children can be added for USD 50. The resort suits older children well, while younger children need close supervision because of the lake setting, raised platforms and outdoor activity options.
The cottages are simple, warm and comfortable, with local art, fabric and décor giving the rooms a Ugandan feel. Each room has an en suite bathroom with hot showers, flushing toilets, a sink, towels and good bedding. After gorilla trekking, a long transfer or a cold morning around Kisoro, the hot shower and quiet room make a real difference.
The restaurant and bar area is one of the best parts of the stay. It has the feel of a cosy mountain lodge, with an African finish, lake views and a warm indoor area for the cooler evenings. Meals are prepared with fresh herbs and vegetables from the garden, and guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner overlooking the lake. On relaxed days, you can sit outside with a drink and watch fishermen crossing the water in dugout canoes.

Facilities include free wireless internet from the restaurant area, free breakfast, free parking, a stocked canteen with soft drinks, and laundry service for guests staying two or more consecutive nights. Laundry is hand washed and air dried, so it is best arranged early during the stay.
For families, the lodge offers simple children’s entertainment such as board games, puzzles, boat trips on the lake and stand-up paddleboarding, while adults head out for gorilla trekking or other activities. Water sport equipment rentals can also be arranged for guests who want time on the lake.
Transfers can be arranged from Kabale, Lake Bunyonyi, Kisoro and Kigali, as well as from the lodge to gorilla trekking starting points in Rushaga, Nkuringo and Mgahinga. These transfers need to be booked in advance. Visitors who want to avoid the long road journey can also fly from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip, then continue by road to the lodge.
Activities Around Lake Mutanda Resort
Lake Mutanda Resort is not only a place to sleep before gorilla trekking. It is a good base for travellers who want to enjoy the southern side of Bwindi, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Lake Mutanda and the Virunga volcano region without moving from lodge to lodge every night.
Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga
Gorilla trekking is the main reason many guests choose to stay here. From the resort, you can connect to the gorilla trekking starting points in the southern sectors of Bwindi, including Rushaga and Nkuringo, or continue to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The drive from the resort to the Bwindi briefing point is about 1 hour, depending on the sector and road conditions. After the morning briefing, you are assigned a gorilla family and walk into the forest with rangers and trackers.
Gorilla Habituation Experience
Travellers who want more time with mountain gorillas can choose the gorilla habituation experience in the Rushaga area of Bwindi. This is a longer, more involved experience where you join researchers and local trackers for up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated gorilla group. It gives more time around the gorillas than the normal trek, where visitors spend 1 hour with the gorilla family after finding them. The permit is significantly more expensive, costing USD 1,800 for foreign non-residents. Spaces are limited, and permits need early booking with upfront payment, at least 6 months in advance for safer planning.
Golden Monkey Tracking in Mgahinga
Golden monkey tracking is another strong activity from the resort, done in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The experience takes about 2 to 4 hours and starts at the Ntebeko reception. From there, you walk with a guide into the bamboo forest on the lower slopes of Mgahinga. This activity works well for guests who want a lighter primate experience than gorilla trekking, or those staying more than one night around Lake Mutanda and Kisoro. Golden monkeys move quickly, so it is a good activity for visitors who enjoy photography, forest walks and active wildlife viewing.
Canoeing and Boat Trips on Lake Mutanda
Lake Mutanda adds a calm side to the stay. Guests can explore the lake in a traditional dug-out canoe, similar to the ones used by local fishermen, or take a boat trip around the small islands. It is a gentle way to enjoy the lake, see the surrounding hills and watch daily life on the water. Canoeing on Lake Mutanda is best for travellers who want a slower afternoon after trekking. You can paddle near the shore, visit small islands, watch fishermen crossing the lake and enjoy the Virunga Mountains from the water.

Volcano Hiking and Nature Walks
For active travellers, the lodge can be used as a base for hikes in the Virunga region. Options include volcano walks around Mgahinga, the Sabyinyo Gorge area and tougher climbs such as Mount Muhavura. On clear days, higher viewpoints can open up views towards Lake Edward, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the Rwenzori Mountains. Around the lodge itself, guests can also take shorter nature walks, relax in a hammock, sit on the dock, swim from the platform or spend a quiet afternoon watching the lake. Birders should keep binoculars nearby for grey crowned cranes, sacred ibis, hadada ibis, African spoonbills and other lakeshore birds.
