Kidepo Savannah Lodge Near Kidepo Valley National Park

Kidepo Savannah Lodge sits on the edge of Kidepo Valley National Park in northeastern Uganda, close to Kalokudo Gate. The lodge is just 500 metres from the gate, making it one of the most convenient places to stay for travellers who want quick access to the park while still enjoying views of the wider Kidepo landscape. This is a midrange lodge made for guests who want comfort, views and a real sense of the far north. From the lodge, you look out over the open Narus Valley, Mount Morungole and the distant mountain ranges that form the border area with Southern Sudan. The views are part of the stay here. You do not wait until the game drive to feel Kidepo the savannah starts right from the lodge.

The design takes its feel from the surrounding grasslands, rocky outcrops, wildlife country and the culture of the Karamojong people, known for their traditional manyattas and colourful blankets. The lodge was built to blend into the wilderness rather than stand above it, so it feels low, open and connected to the land.

Its location is a major advantage. Guests can reach the lodge without paying park entry fees, then enter Kidepo Valley National Park for game drives, Narus Valley wildlife viewing, cultural visits and longer exploration of Uganda’s most remote safari region. A stay of 3 to 7 nights works well for guests who want enough time to enjoy the park, the lodge views and the wider Karamoja landscape without rushing. Kidepo Savannah Lodge is best for travellers who want a lodge that feels close to the wild, gives access to one of Uganda’s most beautiful national parks and still provides a comfortable base after long drives, hot game drives and quiet evenings under the northern Uganda sky.

Accommodation and Facilities at Kidepo Savannah Lodge

Kidepo Savannah Lodge gives guests a comfortable bush stay close to Kidepo Valley National Park, with rooms set up to match the heat, space and open wilderness of northeastern Uganda. The accommodation is split between self-contained safari tents for guests who want more comfort and non-self-contained lazy camping tents for travellers who want a lower-cost stay without losing the Kidepo setting.

The lodge has 12 tented suites on raised decks, each with enough privacy and wide views over the savannah. The tents are furnished with either 1 double bed or 2 single beds, with soft bedding, tasteful interiors, and a private verandah where guests can sit quietly after a game drive. Each self-contained tent has an en suite bathroom with 24-hour hot showers, running water for hand basins, and a flushing toilet. Some bathrooms are open-air in style, which fits well with the bush setting while still giving guests the comfort they need after a dusty day in the park.

For guests travelling on a tighter budget, the lodge also offers 9 non-self-contained safari tents. These come with 2 single beds or 1 double bed, bedding, towels, a bedside table, and a power outlet for charging phones, cameras and other equipment. These tents share a communal ablution block with hot showers and flushing toilets. They still face the park, and on good days, you may see elephants or buffaloes passing across the wider landscape.

The rooms are built for the Kidepo environment. Beds are comfortable, some are dressed with Maasai-style blankets, and verandahs or terraces open towards the park and surrounding mountains. This is not city-style accommodation. It is a safari lodge where the views, silence, open air and night sky form part of the stay.

Kidepo Savannah Lodge

The main thatched restaurant and bar area is one of the lodge’s strongest features. It is positioned to face the endless savannah, with views stretching towards the southern border of Sudan. Meals are served in this open setting, so guests can enjoy lunch, dinner or evening drinks while looking across the park landscape.

Dining is based on a set menu due to the lodge’s remote location and its reliance on solar power, including for refrigeration. Lunch is typically served as a 2-course meal, while dinner is usually offered as either a 3- or 4-course menu depending on the lodge arrangement. The final meal structure can be confirmed at booking. The kitchen uses local ingredients where possible and blends international dishes with a local touch. Guests with dietary requirements should communicate them in advance so the kitchen can plan properly.

The bar is well stocked with wines, soft drinks and local Ugandan beer. After dinner, the wooden deck in front of the restaurant and lounge is a fine place to sit under the stars. With very little light pollution around Kidepo, the night sky can be clear enough to see the Milky Way, which makes evenings at the lodge feel very different from busier safari destinations.

Facilities at the lodge include the thatched dining area, bar, outdoor deck, lounge space, solar-powered electricity, charging points, hot showers, flushing toilets and shared ablution facilities for the lower-cost tents. Some lodge information also mentions a swimming pool for cooling off, a lounge with binoculars and wildlife books, and friendly staff with good knowledge of the park.

Activities at Kidepo Savannah Lodge

Staying at Kidepo Savannah Lodge places you on the doorstep of one of Uganda’s richest wildlife destinations, allowing for both active and relaxed safari days. The main highlight is the game drive experience in Kidepo Valley National Park, with the Narus Valley forming the park’s premier wildlife-viewing circuit. If you want a different view of the park, you can also join a guided nature walk or walking safari. This gives you time to slow down and take in the savannah on foot, while learning more about the smaller details of the landscape, plant life, and wider ecosystem from knowledgeable guides. For guests with less time, a 3-day fly-in safari can be arranged, combining game drives, a nature walk, and a cultural visit

Bird lovers are well catered for here as well. Kidepo Valley National Park is one of Uganda’s top birding destinations, with well over 400 bird species within the park. Birdwatching is therefore a rewarding addition to any stay, whether during game drives or as a dedicated activity. Cultural experiences are also a highlight of the visit. The lodge can arrange visits to nearby Karamojong villages and manyattas, offering insight into local life, traditions, storytelling, dances, and the daily rhythms of this semi-nomadic community.

For guests who want to stretch the day further, night drives are also available, offering the chance to see Kidepo from a new angle as nocturnal wildlife starts to move. Altogether, this is a lodge where the activities go far beyond simply sleeping near the park. You come here for wildlife, open landscapes, culture and the feeling of being in one of Uganda’s most remote safari regions.
