Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi, fly or drive

Your journey begins at Entebbe International Airport. Your guide will meet you to talk about the trip. If you choose to drive, you will leave early in the morning. The road goes through Masaka and Mbarara cities. You will stop for lunch at the Igongo Cultural Centre. After lunch, the road climbs into the Kigezi highlands. These hills are very green and steep. You will arrive at your lodge in the evening. If you choose to fly, you will take a morning flight. You will land at the Kihihi airstrip. A vehicle will wait there to take you to the forest. The drive from the landing strip to the lodge takes about one hour. You will spend your first night at Mahogany Springs Lodge if you want luxury. For a mid-range stay, we use Buhoma Haven Lodge. Both lodges sit right at the edge of the forest. You can hear the sounds of the trees from your room.
Day 2 Gorilla trekking in Bwindi
You will wake up early for breakfast at the lodge. You must be at the park office by 7.30 in the morning. The park rangers will check your permits and give you a briefing. They will tell you the rules for being near the gorillas. You will then enter the thick forest. The walk can be short, or it can take several hours. This depends on where the gorillas slept the night before. You will spend one hour with the gorilla
family. You can watch them eat, play, and groom each other. The silverback is the leader, and he is very large. He keeps the group safe. You should keep a distance of 7m from them. After the hour ends, you will walk back to the park office.
The Four-Hour Habituation Option
You can choose a different type of trek in the Rushaga sector. This is the Gorilla Habituation Experience. You get to spend four hours with a family that is still getting used to humans. You will walk with researchers and rangers. This costs 1500 USD per permit per person as of the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) 2024-2026 tariff. It is a better choice for people who want to see how gorillas behave for a longer time. Only four people can do this each day. You must book this permit 4 to 6 months in advance.
Day 3: Transfer to Kibale via Queen Elizabeth area
After breakfast, you will leave Bwindi for Kibale Forest. This drive takes about six hours. The road goes through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. You might see some lions from the road, but we do not stop for a full game drive. This keeps our focus on reaching the primate capital of the world. You will pass through many tea fields near Fort Portal town. The soil here is very red, and the trees are very tall. You will arrive at Kibale in the afternoon. For a luxury stay, you will check into Chimpundu Lodge. For a mid-range stay, you will go to Turaco Treetops. These lodges are near the Kanyanchu visitor center. You will eat dinner and listen to the forest’s night sounds. Many small primates like bushbabies are active at night here.
Day 4: Chimp tracking, Bigodi walk
Kibale Forest has the highest number of primates in East Africa. There are over 1500 chimpanzees here. You will go to the Kanyanchu office for a briefing at 8.00 in the morning. The rangers will lead you into the forest. Chimpanzees are very loud and easy to find by their calls. They spend time on the ground and
high in the trees. You will have one hour to watch them. They move much faster than gorillas. You might see them hunting or using tools to get food. After the trek, you will go back to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you will visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. This is a community project. You will walk on wooden paths over the swamp. You can see eight other species of monkeys here. This includes the red colobus and the grey-cheeked mangabey.
Full Day Chimpanzee Habituation
Kibale also offers a longer chimp encounter. This is the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX). You can spend a full day with the chimps. You start at 6.30 in the morning and stay until they build their nests at night. The cost for this is 300 USD for foreign visitors. It is the best way to get photos without many other people around. You will learn about the different personalities of the chimps
Day 5 Return to Entebbe, optional Kasese flight
This is the last day of your trip. You will eat a slow breakfast at the lodge. You will then start the six-hour drive back to Entebbe. The road is paved and goes through central Uganda. You will see many fruit stalls and markets on the way. We will stop for a quick lunch. You will reach the airport in time for your evening flight home. If you want to fly back, we can arrange a flight from the Kasese airstrip to Entebbe. This takes about one hour
Permit Costs and Booking
The price of permits is set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. A standard gorilla permit costs 800 USD. A chimpanzee permit in Kibale costs 250 USD. These prices cover park entry, ranger fees, and security. We recommend booking these six months before you travel. Permits are limited, and they sell out fast during the dry months. We cannot hold a permit without full payment to the park office
Best Time to Visit
You can see primates in Uganda at any time of the year. The dry months are June, July, August, and September. December and January are also dry. The forest floor is less muddy during these times. This makes walking easier for most people. The rainy months are April, May, and November. It rains often, but the chimps stay lower in the trees to find food. This can make them easier to see. Photographers often like the rainy season because the air is very clear and the light is soft.
What to Pack for the Forest
Hiking boots with a good grip for muddy paths.
Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts to protect from bugs.
Garden gloves to help you hold onto branches.
A waterproof rain jacket or a heavy poncho.
A small backpack to carry your water and lunch box.
Insect repellent with DEET.
A camera with a good zoom lens for animals in the trees.
- Extra batteries and memory cards
Physical Fitness Levels
Trekking in Bwindi can be hard. The altitude is between 1100 and 2500 meters. The hills are steep, and there are no clear paths in some areas. You should be in good health. If you are worried about the walk, you can hire a porter. A porter is a local person who carries your bag for about 10 to 20 USD. They also help you by pulling or pushing you on steep sections. Hiring a porter is a great way to help the local community.
Staying Safe and Healthy
You must be healthy to visit the primates. They can catch human illnesses like the flu or a cold. If you are sick, you will not be allowed to enter the forest. This is to protect the animals. You will be asked to wear a face mask when you are near the gorillas. You should also wash your hands before the trek starts. The park rangers will carry a radio and a gun for your safety. There are no wild animals that will attack you if you follow the rules
