7 Day Uganda Birding Safari from Kigali

A 7-day Uganda birding safari from Kigali is designed for birders who want a focused Albertine Rift route with strong target species and more time in the field. Starting in Kigali gives faster access to the Ruhija sector of Bwindi, reducing the long transfer that would come with starting from Entebbe. The safari begins in Rwanda and crosses into Uganda through Cyanika or Katuna, then continues to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for high-altitude forest birding. The route focuses on Ruhija, Mubwindi Swamp, the Bamboo Zone, The Neck and Buhoma before continuing to Ishasha, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Mabamba Swamp. Key targets include African Green Broadbill, Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Short-tailed Warbler, Regal Sunbird, Black Bee-eater, Martial Eagle, African Skimmer and Shoebill Stork. The safari ends in Entebbe, with Mabamba Swamp planned as the final shoebill search before your flight. This itinerary is best for serious birders, photographers and travellers who want an organised Uganda birding route with forest, savannah, wetlands and papyrus habitats in one week.

Detailed itinerary

Day 1, Kigali to Bwindi Ruhija and Evening Forest Edge Birding

Your birding safari starts with pickup from Kigali International Airport or your Kigali hotel. After a short briefing, drive north to the Rwanda and Uganda border. The transfer to Ruhija in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park takes about 4 to 5 hours, depending on border clearance and road conditions. Ruhija is one of the best high-altitude birding areas in Bwindi, with access to forest edge habitats and the Mubwindi Swamp trail. After check-in, take a short evening birding walk around the forest edge. This first session helps you settle into the habitat and begin looking for species such as black-billed turaco, African goshawk and cinnamon-chested bee-eater. Accommodation options: Luxury, Ruhija Gorilla Safari Lodge, Mid-range, Bakiga Lodge, Budget, Broadbill Forest Camp

Day 2, Mubwindi Swamp Trail Birding for African Green Broadbill

Spend the full day birding the Mubwindi Swamp trail, one of Bwindi’s most important routes for serious birders. The trail descends through dense montane forest towards the swamp and can be slippery, steep and physically demanding in some sections. Sturdy hiking boots, rain gear and a reasonable level of fitness are important for this day. The main target is the African Green Broadbill, one of the most sought-after Albertine Rift species in Uganda. Your guide will also search for Grauer’s Rush Warbler around the swamp and other forest species along the trail. The pace is slow and focused, allowing time for calls, mixed feeding flocks and careful scanning of the canopy and undergrowth. Target birds: African Green Broadbill, Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Handsome Francolin, Blue-headed Sunbird, Regal Sunbird, Archer’s Robin-Chat

Day 3, Bamboo Zone Birding and Transfer to Buhoma via The Neck

Start the morning birding around the Bamboo Zone near Ruhija. This habitat is useful for species that are not as easily found on the lower trails. Your guide will search for Mountain Illadopsis and other high-altitude forest birds before you begin the transfer to Buhoma. The drive takes about 3 hours, with birding stops along the way. The route passes through The Neck, a narrow forest corridor linking different sections of Bwindi. This area gives access to riverine forest and mixed altitude species, making it a productive stop between Ruhija and Buhoma. After a picnic lunch and birding around The Neck, continue to Buhoma for dinner and overnight stay. Target birds: Mountain Illadopsis, Cassin’s Flycatcher, Black Bee-eater, many-coloured Bush-shrike, Western Bronze-naped Pigeon Accommodation options: Luxury, Buhoma Lodge, Mid-range, Haven Lodge Buhoma, Budget, Buhoma Community Rest Camp

Day 4, Buhoma Forest Birding or Optional Gorilla Trekking

Spend the day birding the Buhoma sector of Bwindi. Buhoma sits at a lower altitude than Ruhija, so the bird list changes and adds species that are less likely on the higher trails. Your guide may use the Waterfall Trail, Main Trail and nearby forest-edge routes depending on recent sightings and weather. Early morning is usually the most productive time for calls, mixed flocks and forest activity. Key targets include Short-tailed Warbler, Bar-tailed Trogon, White-bellied Robin-Chat, Pink-footed Puffback and Red-throated Alethe. Some species require patience and careful listening, especially in dense forest. Travellers who want to add gorilla trekking can use this day for Bwindi gorilla trekking instead of the main birding session. Gorilla trekking requires a separate permit and should be requested at the time of booking.

Day 5, Transfer to Queen Elizabeth Through Ishasha Plains Birding

After breakfast, leave Buhoma and transfer towards Queen Elizabeth National Park through the Ishasha sector. The drive takes about 4 hours, depending on birding stops and road conditions. This day gives a major habitat shift from Bwindi’s forest to Ishasha’s open savannah, acacia woodland and riverine areas. Ishasha is known for tree climbing lions, but for birders it adds raptors, plains birds and open-country species. Your guide will search the plains and woodland edges for Martial Eagle, Palm-nut Vulture, African Crake, Trilling Cisticola and Senegal Plover. Dinner and overnight stay in  Ishasha. Accommodation options: Luxury, Ishasha Wilderness Camp, Mid-range, Enjojo Lodge, Budget, Topi Lodge

Day 6, Kazinga Channel Birding Cruise and Kasenyi Plains

After breakfast, drive from Ishasha to the northern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The transfer takes about 2 hours, depending on stops. The main activity is a birding cruise along the Kazinga Channel, the natural waterway connecting Lake George and Lake Edward. This is one of Uganda’s best places for relaxed waterbird viewing and photography from the boat. You may see great white pelicans, yellow-billed storks, cormorants, kingfishers, herons, egrets, gull-billed terns and other water-associated species. Hippos, crocodiles, elephants and buffaloes are also commonly seen along the channel. After the cruise, continue birding around the Kasenyi plains and nearby wetland edges. The guide will search for African Skimmer where conditions are suitable, along with Papyrus Gonolek in nearby swamp habitats. Accommodation options: Luxury, Mweya Safari Lodge, Mid-range, Kasenyi Safari Camp, Budget, Pumba Safari Cottages

Day 7, Mabamba Swamp Shoebill Search and Departure from Entebbe

Start early for the long transfer to Entebbe. The drive takes about 6 to 7 hours before the Mabamba extension, depending on road conditions and traffic. On arrival near Lake Victoria, continue to Mabamba Swamp for a canoe birding experience. Mabamba is one of the most reliable places in Uganda to search for the Shoebill Stork. Local guides use small canoes to move through papyrus channels and shallow wetland areas. Besides the shoebill, the swamp may produce Lesser Jacana, African Pygmy Goose, Blue-breasted Bee-eater and Swamp Flycatcher. After the Mabamba visit, continue to Entebbe International Airport or your hotel. A late evening or night flight is recommended because this is a long final travel day.
