18 Day Uganda Birding Safari and Wildlife Tour

This 18-day Uganda birding safari is designed for birders, photographers and nature travellers who want a complete bird-watching route across Uganda. The tour follows Uganda’s best birding habitats, from Mabamba Wetland near Entebbe to Lake Mburo, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale Forest, Bigodi Wetland, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Murchison Falls National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park and the Karamoja region. The itinerary combines papyrus swamp, acacia woodland, lake shores, montane forest, savannah, crater lakes, riverine habitats, lowland forest edges and semi-arid landscapes. This gives travellers a strong chance to look for Shoebill, Great Blue Turaco, African Finfoot, Papyrus Gonolek, Green-breasted Pitta, African Skimmer, Abyssinian Roller, Karamoja Apalis, Secretary Bird, ostriches, raptors, kingfishers, hornbills, bee-eaters, sunbirds, weavers and many waterbirds. Day 3, Lake Mburo Birding and Optional Boat Safari

Start early with birding in Lake Mburo National Park. The park has open savannah, acacia woodland, lake shores, marshes and rocky areas, making it a rewarding birding destination on the western circuit. Possible sightings include African Finfoot, Bare-faced Go-away-bird, Red-faced Barbet, Lilac-breasted Roller, African Fish Eagle, kingfishers, weavers, woodpeckers, raptors and waterbirds. Wildlife such as zebras, impalas, elands, buffaloes, giraffes and warthogs may also be seen during the birding drive. In the afternoon, a Lake Mburo boat safari, guided nature walk, or horseback safari can be added for travellers who want a wider park experience.

Day 4, Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After breakfast, leave Lake Mburo and drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey passes through western Uganda’s hills, farms, wetlands and roadside habitats, with birding stops where time allows. On arrival near Bwindi, enjoy short birding around the lodge area or along nearby forest edges. Bwindi is one of Uganda’s top birding destinations, especially for travellers interested in montane forest and Albertine Rift species.

Day 5, Bwindi Forest Birding and Optional Gorilla Trekking

After an early breakfast, spend the day birding in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of the strongest birding areas in the park. Ruhija is especially important for travellers interested in montane forest birds and Albertine Rift species. The cooler high-altitude forest, road edges, forest trails and swamp habitats make this sector one of the best places to build a serious Bwindi bird list. Start with birding around Ruhija road, forest edges and nearby trails where possible sightings may include Rwenzori Batis, White-tailed Blue Flycatcher, Black-billed Turaco, Bar-tailed Trogon, Strange Weaver, Mountain Masked Apalis, Chestnut-throated Apalis, Regal Sunbird, Black Bee-eater, Grauer’s Warbler and other forest species. The main birding focus of the day is the trail towards Mubwindi Swamp, one of the most important birding spots in Bwindi. This area is highly valued by birders because it gives chances for some of Bwindi’s most sought-after species, including African Green Broadbill, Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Handsome Francolin, Archer’s Robin-Chat, Dwarf Honeyguide, Shelley’s Crimsonwing, Dusky Crimsonwing and other Albertine Rift birds.

Optional activity
Gorilla trekking can be added for travellers who want to see mountain gorillas in Bwindi. This requires a separate gorilla permit and changes the day’s birding plan because gorilla trekking takes most of the morning and sometimes extends into the afternoon and you’re advised to book in advance. After the Ruhija and Mubwindi birding experience, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 6, Bwindi Birding and Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Start with a final morning of birding around Bwindi, focusing on forest edges and any missed species from the previous day. After the birding session, begin the drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The route may pass through the Ishasha sector, depending on the selected Bwindi sector and road conditions. Ishasha offers open-country birding, raptors, woodland birds, and possible wildlife sightings. Arrive at Queen Elizabeth National Park in the evening.

Possible sightings include Grey Crowned Crane, African Fish Eagle, Black-headed Gonolek, bee-eaters, lapwings, cisticolas, storks, herons, egrets and raptors. In the afternoon, take a Kazinga Channel boat safari. This is one of the best activities on the itinerary for waterbirds and photography. Day 9, Kibale Forest Birding and Optional Chimpanzee Trekking

After breakfast, begin birding in Kibale Forest National Park. Kibale is one of Uganda’s best-known primate forests, but it also supports excellent forest birding. Possible sightings include turacos, hornbills, greenbuls, flycatchers, sunbirds, barbets and other forest birds.

Optional activity
Chimpanzee trekking can be added for travellers who want a primate experience. This requires a separate permit and should be planned in advance. In the afternoon, visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided birding walk. Bigodi is excellent for Great Blue Turaco, Papyrus Gonolek, kingfishers, weavers, sunbirds and wetland species.

Day 10, Transfer to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

After breakfast, drive from the Fort Portal or Kibale area towards Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This is a long transfer day, but it adds important birding value because Ziwa has woodland, grassland, wetland and swamp habitats that support a good mix of birds. On arrival, focus on birding around the sanctuary’s wetland areas, woodland edges and open grassland. The main birding target for this day is the Shoebill. Ziwa is one of Uganda’s useful Shoebill search areas, especially for travellers who want another chance after Mabamba or those who want to strengthen the birding focus of the northern route. The Shoebill search is done in the wetland section with local guidance, depending on water levels, weather and bird movement. Other possible sightings around Ziwa include African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, African Fish Eagle, herons, egrets, weavers, bee-eaters, hornbills, raptors and grassland birds. After the birding and Shoebill search, check in at the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Wildlife may include giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, hartebeests, Uganda kobs, oribis and lions. In the afternoon, take a boat safari on the Nile towards the base of Murchison Falls. After the birding session, begin the drive towards northern Uganda. Depending on the routing and pace, overnight can be arranged in Gulu or another practical stop before continuing to Kidepo Valley National Park the next day.

Day 14, Transfer to Kidepo Valley National Park

After breakfast, continue to Kidepo Valley National Park in Uganda’s far northeast. The drive is long, but the changing landscape introduces drier habitats, open plains and rocky scenery that are very different from western Uganda. Arrive in Kidepo in the afternoon or evening and check in at the lodge. If time allows, enjoy short birding around the lodge area.

Possible sightings include ostriches, Abyssinian Roller, Secretary Bird, Kori Bustard, raptors, hornbills, starlings, weavers, bee-eaters and other dry country species. Wildlife sightings may include buffaloes, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hartebeests, lions and other savannah animals.

This is an optional add-on for travellers who want to combine birding with local community learning, landscapes and pastoral life.

Day 17, Karamoja Birding, Landscapes and Transfer to Kumi

After breakfast, enjoy birding in the Karamoja landscape before continuing towards Kumi. This day adds dry country and semi-arid birding value to the itinerary, especially for travellers interested in northern and eastern Uganda species.
