There is only one type of gorilla in Uganda, the mountain gorilla. Mountain gorillas live in high-altitude forests and are known for their thick black fur, large bodies, and plant-based diet that includes bamboo shoots, stems, and fruits.
Where to See Gorillas in Uganda
Mountain gorillas in Uganda are found in two locations, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both parks are in southwestern Uganda and are the only places in the country where gorilla trekking takes place.
Gorilla Trekking Experience in Bwindi
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to a large portion of the world’s mountain gorilla population. Trekking takes place in four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. A typical trekking day starts with a briefing at the park headquarters, followed by a guided walk into the forest. Once a gorilla group is found, visitors spend one hour observing them. Gorilla habituation is also available in the Rushaga sector, where visitors can spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated group.

Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has one habituated gorilla group, the Nyakagezi family. The park also offers other activities such as golden monkey trekking, hiking, and birdwatching.
Gorilla Trekking Permits in Uganda
Gorilla trekking requires a gorilla permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Permits should be booked several months in advance, especially during the dry season when demand is higher.
How to Get to Bwindi and Mgahinga
Both parks can be reached by road from Kampala, which takes about 8 to 10 hours. Flights can also be arranged from Entebbe to Kisoro or Kihihi airstrips.
