3 Day Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon Hiking Safari
A 3-day Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon hiking tour is one of the best short adventure trips in eastern Uganda for travellers who want scenic walking, fresh mountain air, and cultural experiences without taking on a summit climb. This trip combines the three waterfalls of Sipi, a hands-on Arabica coffee experience, and a guided forest walk in Mount Elgon National Park. It is ideal for travellers looking for a moderate hiking holiday with strong views, local character, and a quieter side of Uganda beyond the usual safari circuit. The trip starts and ends in Kampala or Entebbe. It covers a distance of roughly 275 kilometers (170 miles) each way. You will move from the busy city streets to the cool, high-altitude air of the Sebei region.

Detailed itinerary
Day 1, travel to Sipi and mountain scenery
Your guide will pick you up from your residence in Kampala or Entebbe at 7:00 AM. We start early to beat the morning traffic leaving the city. The drive heads east along the Jinja highway. You will cross the New Nile Bridge in Jinja. We will continue through Iganga and Mbale town. As we leave Mbale, the road
begins to climb. The landscape changes from flat plains to winding roads up the mountain. You will see large banana plantations and cliffs as we approach the Kapchorwa district. The air gets cooler here because of the altitude. We aim to arrive at your lodge by 1:00 PM for lunch.
Afternoon Activity: After lunch, you can rest or take a short village walk. Many travelers choose to visit a local community viewpoint. Here, you can see the wide Karamoja plains stretching out below the mountain. This is a light walk to help your legs stretch after the long drive. Dinner and Overnight: You will stay at a lodge near the falls. The sound of the river is often audible from the rooms.
Luxury Option: Sipi River Lodge (Private cottages)
Mid-Range Option: Rafiki Lodge Sipi (Cliff-edge views)
Budget Option: Lacam Lodge (Bandas)
Day 2, Sipi Falls hike and coffee experience
This is the main activity day. You will need good grip shoes and a rain jacket. Morning: The Sipi Falls Hike. After breakfast at 8:00 AM, you meet a local guide. The Sipi River flows down the mountain and
drops over three separate waterfalls. We hike to all three.
The three waterfalls of Sipi
The Top Fall (85 meters): We usually start here. It is the second-highest drop. The trail is steep but rewarding. You get close to the water and feel the spray.
The Middle Fall (Simba): This is the smallest fall, around 65 meters. It has a cave behind it. You can walk into the cave and watch the water curtain fall in front of you. It makes for excellent photos.
The Bottom Fall (100 meters): This is the main Sipi Fall most people see in pictures. The water hits the rocks with great force. The mist here is heavy and keeps the surrounding vegetation green all year.
The hike takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on your pace. The paths go through local farms. You will see onions, cabbage, and beans growing on the steep hills. The ground can be muddy if it has rained recently.
Sabiny coffee tour in the afternoon
Afternoon: The Sabiny Coffee Experience. After lunch, we visit a local coffee farmer. Mount Elgon is famous for Arabica coffee. This is not just a farm walk; you participate in the process. The farmer will show you how they pick the red cherries. You will help pulp the beans to remove the skin. Next, you will roast the beans over an open fire. The smell of fresh-roasting coffee is strong and pleasant. Finally, you grind the beans using a traditional wooden mortar and pestle. You finish by drinking a cup of the coffee you helped make. This tour directly supports the local farming families.

Optional abseiling for adventurous travellers
If hiking is not enough, you can pay extra for abseiling. This involves rappelling down the side of the main 100-meter waterfall. Trained guides manage the ropes and safety gear. Dinner and Overnight: Return to your lodge for dinner. It gets cold at night (around 10°C to 15°C), so bring a sweater.
Day 3, Kapkwai forest walk and return
We wake up early for breakfast and check out of the lodge. We drive to the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre. This is a section of Mount Elgon National Park run by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Morning: Mount ElgonNature Walk. This is different from the Sipi hike. You are now inside the protected national park. An armed UWA ranger will lead the walk. The trail is less steep than Sipi but goes through dense forest.
Primates: Look for Black-and-White Colobus monkeys in the tree canopy. Blue Monkeys are also common here.
Trees: You will see the Elgon Teak and massive Fig trees. The ranger will explain which plants the locals use for medicine.
- Caves: The trail often leads to one of the many caves on the mountain slopes. These caves were once used by the Sabiny people and their cattle
This walk takes about 2 hours. It is quiet and focused on the small details of the forest ecosystem. The Return Journey: We begin the drive back to Kampala around 11:30 AM. We will stop in Mbale or Jinja for a late lunch. The drive back follows the same route. Expect to reach Kampala or Entebbe by 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM, depending on traffic
How difficult is the hiking
The hiking is moderate. You do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking for 3 to 4 hours. Sipi Falls: The path has steep sections with wooden ladders. It gets slippery when wet. Kapkwai Walk: The terrain is gentler but involves walking on forest trails with tree roots. If you have bad knees, we can arrange a shorter hike to just the bottom waterfall, which is easier to access.
What to pack for the trip
Hiking Boots: Sneakers are okay for dry days, but boots with ankle support and good grip are better.
Rain Jacket: Rain can happen quickly on the mountain, even in the dry season.
Warm Clothing: It gets cold in the evenings.
Insect Repellent: For the forest walk.
Sunscreen and Hat: At high altitudes, the sun is strong

Frequently asked questions about the Sipi Falls trip
Is it safe to hike Sipi Falls alone?
While the area is generally safe, we do not recommend hiking alone. The trails are not always clearly marked, and they cross private farmland. A local guide ensures you stay on the right path and facilitates communication with landowners.
Can children do this hike?
Yes, active children aged 6 and up usually enjoy the hike. If you have younger children, we can drive closer to the main waterfall to reduce the walking distance. The Kapkwai forest walk is very family-friendly.
Is there malaria in Sipi Falls?
Sipi Falls is at a high altitude, which reduces the number of mosquitoes compared to Kampala. However, malaria is still a risk in Uganda. You should take antimalarial medication and use insect repellent.
Can I swim in the waterfalls?
Swimming is possible at the bottom of some falls, but the water is very cold. The force of the water can also be dangerous directly under the drop. Ask your guide for the safest spot to dip your feet or swim.
How much is the abseiling activity?
Abseiling typically costs around $50 USD per person. You can decide to add this activity when you arrive, but let us know in advance so we can book the equipment and guides.
What currency should I bring?
The lodges and park fees are covered, but bring Uganda Shillings (UGX) for tips, drinks, or souvenirs. Small bills (5,000 to 20,000 UGX notes) are best for tipping local guides and porters.
