Sports fishing in Uganda

With about 25% of Uganda is covered by fresh water bodies such as Lake Victoria, River Nile, Lakes Edward, George, Albert and Bunyonyi among others. This makes Uganda tours activities such as sport fishing not only a possibility but a thrilling engagement as well. In fact, famous anglers such as John Wilson, Jeremy Wade and Zed Hogan from the National Geographic channel have ventured into sport fishing in Uganda.

 

Unfortunately, not many travelers are inclined towards sport fishing and they often prefer to plan their safari in the savannah wilderness or along the mighty River Nile. There are about 350 fish species in Uganda with the most caught species for commercial purposes being; Nile perch and Tilapia. Other common species include; lung fish, cat fish, silver fish and Tiger fish. Nile Perch happens to be the highlight of a sport fishing excursion.

Uganda has over 350 species of fish. The two major species caught for commercial purposes are the Tilapia and Nile Perch. The other types of fish are the Protoperus, Rastrinabola, lung fish and cat fish. The Nile perch is arguably the largest fish one can catch in Uganda.

They can weigh more than 220kgs. Introduced in Uganda in the early 19th century, they dominate the waters of Uganda. The Nile Perch is often caught using the smaller tiger fish as a bait. The Tiger fish has beautiful colors of the rainbow but are very resilient with sharp teeth and hard jaws.  Other large fish in Uganda are the lung fish and Tilapia. Tilapia is the most preferred fish eaten in Ugandan homes although the small silver fish is gaining popularity for its nutritious value.

The River Nile and Lake Victoria are arguably the two best fishing spots in Uganda as you shall find out later. The main method of catching fish in these two famous water bodies is by casting lures or using live baits to catch the Nile Perch, Tilapia and Tiger fish. Fishing in Uganda is incredible because it involves spotting Africa’s famous wildlife and the amazing scenery. The possibility of encountering dangerous creatures like crocodiles make the trips even more exciting and adventurous. However, safety is paramount and in most cases anglers are escorted by armed rangers from the park offices just in case you encounter hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes or elephants. Anglers do not go near crocodile infested sections of the lakes or rivers.

Several methods can be employed during sport fishing depending on water levels and the fisherman’s skill. Some of these methods include; Angling, Hooks, Lures, baskets

Below are some of the best destinations for sport fishing in Uganda

Entebbe

Aside from being popular as the location of Uganda’s only operational international airport. Entebbe is quite the adventurous city as well. As travelers alight, they are instantly aware of a cool breeze sweeping over the entire field and into the airport. Although unaware, they have made their first contact with Lake Victoria; one of the world’s most important fresh water lakes.

Located on the southern shores of Lake Victoria, Entebbe is mainly covered by water and is the perfect destination for sport fishing. Visitors can opt for a full day or half day excursions that last 8 hours and 4 hours respectively. Always ensure to have all your equipment ready and checked and to steer clear of Crocodile infested areas.

The Ssese islands

The Ssese islands are a combination of about 84 islands spread on Lake Victoria. Each of the islands is perfect for sport fishing; especially angling. They can be accessed by ferry from Entebbe at Nakiwogo landing site to Kalangala. Travelers are encouraged to travel with their own equipment; ready and checked or hire some at the island. In addition, a speedboat might be needed to explore all the islands.

Many are virgin and rarely visited. Fishing in Lake Victoria is done all year long but the months between October and March are best for sport fishing. To visit the various islands in the Lake, a speed boat is important. The hotels in Kampala and Entebbe can provide the boats including experienced anglers to accompany you to the best fishing spots. Equipment can be provided but it is recommended that you travel with your own. Fishing in Lake Victoria can be done from 9:00am to 5.00pm. During the rainy season, the lake can become very calm and clear offering great chances to catch tilapia. During the dry season, there are massive waves in the lake which can affect the activity. During such times, the sheltered bay is preferable for fishing. Night fishing trips are also arranged in Lake Victoria but it is not advisable to avoid fishing during the full moon. Fishing in Lake Victoria can start from Munyonyo in Kampala, or around the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (Zoo) in Entebbe. As already noted, the most common fishing method in Lake Victoria is trolling with lures. Tilapia can be caught by the fly fishing method.

Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison falls national park is about 340 kilometers from Kampala, both a spectacular destination for wildlife viewing and sport fishing. The park is dissected by the Victoria Nile as it bursts forth from Lake Victoria, flowing northwards into Lake Albert. The free flowing river squeezes through a 7m gorge before plunging into the devil’s cauldron below.

Most will station at the base of the falls to catch fish being stirred up by the falling water. The area is a hot spot for a variety of species such as; Nile Perch, Tilapia, cat fish, Tiger fish, barbell, Angara and yellow fish. Alternatively, one can catch some fish downstream among the rocks as well. This area is often calm and perfect for casting nets.

The Murchison Falls National Park is a great place to go for fishing while in Uganda. The turbulent falls are rich in oxygen which attracts huge Nile perch – Some weighing over 90 Kilograms. The largest on record was 108 kilograms. The section of the river Nile flowing through the park is also home to Tilapia, catfish, Tiger fish (Awaka), barbell, Tilapia, ferocious fighter, Angara and yellow fish among other species. Fishing is usually done by boat around the banks of the river although anglers can walk to the base of waterfalls to throw their lines.

The price for sport fishing in Murchison falls national park is US $50 per day or US $150 for four days. You would need to also pay park entrance fees in a separate arrangement. Sport fishing in Murchison Falls National Park is guided by a policy of catch and release. The greatest reward is holding a 100 kilogram Nile perch close to your chest or boat and taking some amazing photos to show your friends and the world.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is located about 3–4 hours away from Kampala. It is one of the best places to have sport fishing in Uganda. There are 5 lakes located within the park and the largest is Lake Mburo. This fresh water lake is a haven for several fish species such as; Tilapia and catfish. Sport fishing is quite special at Lake Mburo because visitors can request their lodges or hotels to prepare for them the fish that they have caught.

The Mazinga spot is the best fishing place in Lake Mburo because it is free from crocodiles and hippos.  One is required to pay US $15 for a fishing permit by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. You need to bring your own fishing equipment. Fishing in Lake Mburo is special because Anglers can arrange to have the fish prepared as a meal by their hotel.

Source of the Nile, Jinja

Based on the western shores of Lake Victoria, source of the Nile is perfect for sport fishing. Here, anglers can look forward to catching large Nile Perch and Tilapia. Your fishing excursion can be combined with water sports such as white water rafting, Kayaking and tubing.

Best time for sports fishing in Uganda

The dry season can be especially troublesome for anglers because of the heat and turbulent waters. In addition, they would need to watch out for crocodiles and Hippos that come closer to the shore in the heat. The best time to go sport fishing especially on Lake Victoria is from March to October. The temperatures are relatively favorable and the rains keep the water calm.
