Detailed Itinerary

Day 1, Arrival in Entebbe and Botanical Gardens Birding

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport, where your guide meets you and transfers you to your hotel. If your flight arrives early, visit Entebbe Botanical Gardens for relaxed introductory birding. The gardens offer a useful mix of woodland, lakeshore and open habitat, with chances to see Great Blue Turaco, Orange Weaver, African Open-billed Stork, Ross’s Turaco, African Fish Eagle and other common Entebbe species. This first day is kept light to allow time for rest after international travel. Accommodation options: Luxury Hotel No. 5, Boutique The Boma Entebbe

Day 2, Mabamba Shoebill Search and Transfer to Eastern Uganda

Start early for Mabamba Swamp, one of Uganda’s leading Shoebill sites near Lake Victoria. You board a local canoe with a site guide and move through the papyrus channels to search for the Shoebill. Early morning is best because the bird is more likely to be active while hunting in shallow wetland areas. Other possible species include African Jacana, Lesser Jacana, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Warbler and Swamp Flycatcher. After the Mabamba excursion, begin the transfer east towards Jinja, Mbale and the Sipi Falls area.

Day 3, Sipi and Mount Elgon Birding with Optional Abseiling

Spend the morning birding around Sipi Falls and the lower slopes of Mount Elgon. This area adds altitude variety to the itinerary before the route continues to the western forests. Target species include Jackson’s Francolin, Moorland Francolin, Tacazze Sunbird, Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon and, with luck, Lammergeier around the cliffs. Travellers who want a scenic activity can add optional abseiling at the main Sipi waterfall. This is managed by trained guides using ropes, harnesses and safety equipment. Birders who prefer to stay focused can use this time for extra local birding. Accommodation: Sipi River Lodge

Day 4, Lake Bisina Birding for Fox’s Weaver and Transfer to Masindi

Depart early for Lake Bisina, one of the key sites for Fox’s Weaver, Uganda’s only endemic bird. The wetland and lake-edge habitats may also produce African Pygmy Goose, Lesser Jacana, Shoebill as a second possibility, papyrus species and other waterbirds depending on the season and water levels. After birding Lake Bisina, continue to Masindi, the gateway to Budongo Forest and the Royal Mile. This is a long transfer day, usually about 7 to 8 hours, including birding stops. Accommodation: Masindi Hotel, best available in the area

Day 5, Budongo Royal Mile Birding and Transfer to Murchison Falls

Start early on the Royal Mile in Budongo Forest, one of Uganda’s most productive forest birding roads. The wide forest track and tall canopy give strong opportunities for forest species such as Chocolate-backed Kingfisher, Blue-breasted Kingfisher, African Dwarf Kingfisher, Nahan’s Partridge, White-thighed Hornbill, Ituri Batis and mixed forest flocks. After the Royal Mile session, continue towards Murchison Falls National Park and settle into your lodge. Accommodation options: Luxury, Nile Safari Lodge or Paraa Safari Lodge

Day 6, Nile Delta Birding Cruise and Murchison Game Drive

Take a Nile Delta birding cruise in Murchison Falls National Park. The delta and riverbanks are strong for waterbirds, raptors and wetland species. Target birds may include Shoebill as a second chance, Goliath Heron, Saddle-billed Stork, African Skimmer, African Fish Eagle, Northern Carmine Bee-eater and various kingfishers. Later, continue with a game drive in the northern sector of the park. This adds savannah birding and wildlife viewing, with chances for Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Denham’s Bustard, Secretarybird, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and lions.

Day 7, Transfer to Kibale Forest and Evening Birding

After breakfast, drive south towards Kibale Forest National Park through the Albertine Rift region, rural towns and tea plantation landscapes. This is a long transfer day, usually about 6 hours depending on road conditions and stops. On arrival, check in and take a light evening birding walk around the forest edge if time allows. Possible species include Black-and-white Shrike-flycatcher, Masked Apalis, Cassin’s Grey Flycatcher and other forest-edge birds. Accommodation options: Luxury Kyaninga Lodge or Ndali Lodge

Day 8, Green-breasted Pitta Search and Bigodi Wetland Birding

Start before dawn for the Green-breasted Pitta search in Kibale Forest. This bird is most active early, and sightings depend on calls, display activity, weather and forest conditions. The session is specialist and requires patience, quiet movement and good timing. After the forest session, continue birding around Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. This community-managed wetland is productive for Great Blue Turaco, Papyrus Gonolek, White-spotted Flufftail, Yellow-billed Barbet, Black Bishop, and other wetland or edge species. Optional chimpanzee tracking can be arranged with advance permit booking for travellers who want to add a primate experience.

Day 9, Semliki Birding for Guinea-Congo Forest Species

Drive to Semliki National Park for birding in one of Uganda’s most important Guinea-Congo forest habitats. The trails are generally flatter than Bwindi, but the area is humid and can be hot. Target birds may include Black-casqued Wattled Hornbill, Red-billed Dwarf Hornbill, Yellow-throated Cuckoo, Nkulengu Rail, White-throated Hornbill, Piping Hornbill, Red-rumped Tinkerbird and other forest species. This day adds species that are difficult or impossible to find on the higher Albertine Rift route.

Day 10, Queen Elizabeth Birding and Kazinga Channel Cruise

Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park for savannah and wetland birding. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake George and Lake Edward. The channel gives close views of waterbirds, waders, raptors and wildlife along the shore. Target species may include African Skimmer, Great White Pelican, Yellow-billed Stork, Saddle-billed Stork, African Spoonbill, Water Thick-knee, various plovers and African Fish Eagle. Accommodation options: Luxury, Kyambura Gorge Lodge or Mweya Safari Lodge

Day 11, Ishasha Birding and Transfer to Bwindi

Drive through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, combining plains birding with a chance to look for tree-climbing lions. Ishasha adds open-country species, raptors and woodland birds before the route climbs into the highlands of Bwindi. Possible birds include Martial Eagle, Palm-nut Vulture, African Crake, Trilling Cisticola, Senegal Lapwing, Double-toothed Barbet and Ross’s Turaco. Continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where cooler mountain air and dense forest introduce the Albertine Rift section of the safari. Accommodation options: Luxury Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge or Mahogany Springs

Day 12, Mubwindi Swamp Birding in Bwindi Ruhija

This is one of the most important birding days of the safari. Start early for the Mubwindi Swamp trail in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi. The trail is steep and can be muddy, so good hiking boots and a steady pace are important. The main target is the African Green Broadbill, one of the most sought-after Albertine Rift species. Other possible species include Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Archer’s Robin-Chat, Regal Sunbird, Blue-headed Sunbird, Ruwenzori Batis, Strange Weaver and Handsome Francolin. Accommodation options: Gorilla Mist Camp or Bakiga Lodge

Day 13, Optional Gorilla Trekking or Bwindi Forest Birding

Today can be planned around either gorilla trekking or another full day of forest birding in Bwindi. Travellers choosing gorilla trekking need a gorilla permit booked in advance. The trek can take several hours depending on the location of the gorilla family, but it adds one of Uganda’s strongest wildlife experiences to the birding route. Birders who prefer to stay focused can continue forest birding for species such as Short-tailed Warbler, Chapin’s Flycatcher, Many-coloured Bush-shrike, Bar-tailed Trogon, Red-throated Alethe and Blue-headed Sunbird. Accommodation options: Mahogany Springs or Buhoma Lodge

8 Day Uganda Gorilla, Chimp and Wildlife Safari

After breakfast, transfer to Kihihi Airstrip for your scheduled domestic flight to Entebbe. This flight avoids the long road transfer from southwestern Uganda and gives you a smoother final day. On arrival in Entebbe, connect to your international flight or transfer to a hotel if you have an extra night.
