Detailed itinerary
Day 1, Mabamba Shoebill Birding and Transfer to Kibale
Begin the safari with an early pick-up from Entebbe or Kampala and drive to Mabamba Wetland, one of Uganda’s best-known Shoebill birding sites. The wetland sits on the edge of Lake Victoria and is explored by canoe with local bird guides who understand the channels, feeding areas and papyrus edges. The main target bird here is the Shoebill, but the wetland also supports many other species such as African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, African Marsh Harrier, Long-toed Lapwing, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, herons, egrets and weavers. Mabamba is a strong opening point because it gives international birders one of Uganda’s most memorable birding experiences within easy reach of Entebbe. After the Mabamba birding session, begin the drive to Kibale Forest. The route passes through central and western Uganda, with possible roadside birding stops depending on time and weather. Arrive near Kibale in the evening for dinner and overnight. Accommodation options: Budget Isunga Lodge, Mid-range Chimpanzee Guesthouse, Luxury Kyaninga Lodge.

Day 2, Kibale Forest Birding and Bigodi Wetland Walk
After breakfast, start the day with guided birding around Kibale Forest National Park. Kibale is widely known for chimpanzee trekking. The forest habitats support turacos, hornbills, barbets, greenbuls, flycatchers, sunbirds and other forest species. Later, continue to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided community wetland walk. This is one of the strongest birding stops on the route because it combines wetland, woodland and village-edge habitats. Bigodi is known for species such as Great Blue Turaco, Papyrus Gonolek, black-and-white casqued hornbill, weavers, kingfishers, sunbirds, and other wetland birds. The wetland also offers chances of seeing monkeys, butterflies and local community conservation work. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Optional activity
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale can be added for travellers who want to combine birding with primates, but it requires a chimpanzee permit which is booked in advance.
Day 3, Semuliki National Park Birding and Transfer to Queen Elizabeth
After breakfast, drive to Semuliki National Park for lowland forest birding. This is one of the best places along the route for birders interested in forest species associated with the western Rift Valley and lowland forest habitats. Spend time birding along forest trails, edges and open sections where possible sightings may include hornbills, greenbuls, forest robins, flycatchers, turacos, woodpeckers and other forest birds. The Sempaya hot springs can be visited briefly if time allows, but the main focus remains birding. After lunch, continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Arrive in the evening, check in at the lodge and prepare for the next day’s birding and boat safari. Accommodation options: Budget Pumba Safari Cottages, Mid-range Bush Lodge, Luxury Kyambura Gorge Lodge
Day 4, Queen Elizabeth Birding and Kazinga Channel Boat Safari
Start early with birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The park has varied habitats, including savannah, wetlands, crater lakes, woodland and lake shores, making it one of the best birding areas in Uganda. Possible sightings include Grey Crowned Crane, African Fish Eagle, Black-headed Gonolek, bee-eaters, lapwings, cisticolas, raptors, storks, herons, egrets and many savannah birds. Wildlife may also be seen during the birding drive, including elephants, buffaloes, warthogs, Uganda kobs and waterbucks. In the afternoon, take a Kazinga Channel boat safari. This is one of the best parts of the itinerary for waterbirds and photography. Look out for African Skimmer, Pied Kingfisher, Malachite Kingfisher, Great White Pelican, Pink-backed Pelican, Yellow-billed Stork, Open-billed Stork, African Spoonbill, cormorants, darters and fish eagles. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5, Morning Birding and Return to Entebbe or Kampala
After breakfast, enjoy a final short birding session around the lodge area, nearby woodland, crater viewpoints or savannah edges depending on your location and departure time. This morning gives you a final chance to look for species missed on the previous day before starting the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. Have lunch en route and arrive in the evening, marking the end of the 5-day Uganda birding safari.
