Construction of Kabaka’s Lake began in 1885 during the reign of Kabaka Mwanga II. The lake was dug manually using local labour, and its original purpose was to serve as a water source for the royal palace and nearby communities. Historical accounts also suggest that the lake was intended to connect to Lake Victoria as part of a wider defensive and transport system, although this plan was never completed. Its location near the Lubiri made it a strategic and symbolic feature within the Buganda Kingdom.

Kabaka’s Lake is located in Mengo, about 3 to 4 kilometres from Kampala city centre. It is easily reached by car or motorcycle using Namirembe Road. The lake sits near key Buganda landmarks, including the Lubiri (Kabaka’s Palace), Bulange (Buganda Parliament), and Namirembe Cathedral. Because of this, it is often included in short Uganda cultural tours. Travel time from the city centre is usually between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on traffic.
Best Time to Visit Kabaka’s Lake
Kabaka’s Lake can be visited at any time of the year, but morning and late afternoon are more comfortable due to lower temperatures. During the dry periods, walking around the lake is easier as paths remain firm. In the rainy season, some areas may become muddy, especially near the edges of the lake. Weekdays are generally quieter, while weekends and event days can be busier.
