Detailed itinerary
Day 1, Mabamba Shoebill Birding and Transfer to Kibale
Your 7-day Uganda birding safari starts with an early pick-up from Entebbe or Kampala. Drive to Mabamba Wetland, one of the best places in Uganda to search for the Shoebill. The birding experience is done by canoe through papyrus channels, open wetland areas and lake-edge vegetation. The Shoebill is the main target bird of the morning, but Mabamba also offers chances to see African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, African Marsh Harrier, Long-toed Lapwing, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, herons, egrets and weavers. After the birding session, continue towards Kibale Forest National Park with lunch en route. The drive passes through central Uganda and the green countryside around Fort Portal. Arrive in the evening, check in at the lodge and rest. Budget accommodation: Isunga Lodge or a similar budget lodge near Kibale

Day 2, Kibale Forest Birding and Bigodi Wetland Walk
After breakfast, start the day with birding around Kibale Forest. The forest is rich in birdlife and gives you a chance to look for turacos, hornbills, barbets, greenbuls, flycatchers, sunbirds and other forest species. Later, visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided birding walk. Bigodi is one of the best birding spots around Kibale because it combines wetland, woodland and community-edge habitats. Possible sightings include Great Blue Turaco, Papyrus Gonolek, black and white casqued hornbill, kingfishers, weavers, sunbirds and other wetland birds.
Optional activity
Chimpanzee trekking can be added in Kibale Forest for travellers who want to include primates. This activity requires a separate chimpanzee trekking permit and increases the total safari cost.
Day 3, Semuliki National Park Birding and Optional Sempaya Hot Springs
After breakfast, drive to Semuliki National Park for a lowland forest birding experience. Semuliki adds a different birding habitat to the route, with forest trails, edges and open sections that are good for slow bird watching. Birding in Semuliki may bring sightings of hornbills, greenbuls, forest robins, flycatchers, turacos, woodpeckers and other lowland forest species. The area is ideal for birders who want to add western Uganda forest birds to the safari list. Sempaya hot springs can be added during the Semuliki visit for travellers interested in one of the park’s major natural attractions. After the birding experience, return towards Fort Portal or the Kibale area for dinner and overnight. Budget option: Pumba Safari Cottages
Day 4, Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Kazinga Channel Boat Safari
After breakfast, drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. On arrival, begin birding around the savannah edges, wetland areas, crater lake surroundings, or lodge area depending on time. Queen Elizabeth is one of Uganda’s strongest birding destinations because it combines open savannah, wetlands, woodland, lakes and crater landscapes. Possible sightings include Grey Crowned Crane, African Fish Eagle, Black-headed Gonolek, bee-eaters, lapwings, cisticolas, storks, herons, egrets and raptors. In the afternoon, take a Kazinga Channel boat safari. This is one of the best birding activities on the route because it brings you close to waterbirds and wildlife along the channel. Look out for Pied Kingfisher, Malachite Kingfisher, Great White Pelican, Pink-backed Pelican, Yellow-billed Stork, Open-billed Stork, African Spoonbill, cormorants, darters and fish eagles. Hippos, buffaloes, elephants and crocodiles may also be seen along the water. Accommodation: Bakiga Lodge

Day 5, Queen Elizabeth Morning Birding and Transfer to Bwindi
Start the morning with birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The focus is on savannah birds, raptors, wetland species and open-country birds. The drive may also offer wildlife sightings such as elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, warthogs and waterbucks. Possible bird sightings include Grey Crowned Crane, African Fish Eagle, Black-headed Gonolek, martial eagle, bee-eaters, lapwings, cisticolas, storks, herons and other savannah species.
Optional activity
Lion tracking can be added for travellers who want a stronger wildlife experience in Queen Elizabeth National Park. This activity is optional because it increases the safari cost. After the morning activity, continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey passes through changing landscapes of savannah, hills, farms and forested areas. Arrive in the evening and check in at a budget lodge near the selected Bwindi sector.
Day 6, Bwindi Birding and Optional Gorilla Trekking
After an early breakfast, spend the day birding in and around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Bwindi is one of Uganda’s most important forest birding destinations and is especially valuable for travellers interested in montane forest species and Albertine Rift birds. Birding can be done along forest trails, road edges, lodge surroundings and community areas near the selected sector. Possible sightings include forest robins, turacos, sunbirds, greenbuls, barbets, hornbills and other montane forest birds.
Optional activity
Gorilla trekking can be added for travellers who want to see mountain gorillas during the safari. This activity requires a separate gorilla permit and has a major effect on the total budget. In the afternoon, drive to Lake Bunyonyi for a relaxed evening by the lake. The lake setting gives the safari a calm final night with beautiful scenery and easy birding around the lodge area. Budget accommodation: Bunyonyi Overland Resort

Day 7, Lake Bunyonyi Birding and Return to Entebbe or Kampala
After breakfast, enjoy relaxed birding around Lake Bunyonyi. The lake area is good for easy bird watching, photography and a gentle final morning before the return journey. Possible sightings may include weavers, kingfishers, herons, egrets, sunbirds, kites and other lake-shore birds. A canoe or boat ride on Lake Bunyonyi can be added for travellers who want a short lake experience before departure. After the morning birding session, begin the drive back to Kampala or Entebbe with lunch en route. A stop at the Equator can be made if time allows.
